I have been.thinking about saving my money up to get one of these, but I don't know which one would be better for the lakes I fish.
My most fished lakes White river (bank) Alan Henry Hubbard creek Possum Kingdom (not as often anymore)
I know I'll be able to do a lot more electronic and storage wise in a john boat, but I like a kayak's portability.
A john boat for myself and a friend would probably be about 6-850 before trailer, and a nicer kayak is about the same.
How would you guys look at this?

My answer is Jon Boat.
Not sure on the size you are wanting but even a 14 ft Jon doesn't have to have a trailer if you got a truck to put it in. You said you'll have a friend so this will be no issue then. Also, if you're mechanically inclined at all you can sometimes stumble on some great deals on older outboard motors. You will enjoy the extra room and stability. Especially if you wanna just anchor and hang out for hours into the night fishin. I've got 4 flat bottom boats 13 different outboards. I know it sounds crazy but when you find an engine for less than $100 that still cranks over, you just buy it. I know there's some die hard kayakers out there but I just can't see enough perks to make me want one.

Looking on Craigslist I see a couple of good deals on two John boats,But no motor, shouldn't be a problem though.
I feel like a john boat would suit me better.

I would suggest Jon boat unless you want to get into one of the higher end kayaks. I've got a Hobie Pro Angler that I fish out. A fully rigged yak is going to run you $1500.00 and up.

Yeah, I think that the Jon boat is going to be what I get. Seems more like something I would use to fish out of.

Go with a pair of kayaks! -lightweight -portability -free fuel -no launch fees -no govt fees -retain value -good exercise -increases the size of your balls -chicks dig it Post this up in the kayak section and I'm sure you will find some local guys willing to let you try one out. I had the same dilemma a few years ago and am very happy with choosing the yaks instead of a small boat. If you make it to the Dallas area you are more than welcome to paddle and fish one of mine to test the waters.

Which ever you decide, be sure to get you a good quality PFD and wear it. Boats are nice to have but with small jon boats and kayaks there are so many things that can go wrong in just a blink of an eye. The main thing is to stay safe and have fun!
Just one more cast!

You won't understand the kayak world until you try it. But be careful if you do because you may never go back to the "always throwing money away every time you want to go fishing world"

Jon boat if you are going to have a motor, but then there is annual cost with motor maintenance, tags, fuel and etc... If your good with that do the Jon boat. If you are not going to have a motor then kayak. I started in college with a Jon boat and have since switched to a kayak. I can fish FAR more water in a day from a yak than a Jon boat, for me there is just no comparison no motor it's a yak all the way. I think that will be a common thought as you don't and never have seen people paddling Jon boats around like you do yaks.
Can someone explain how the Feds count recreational Red Snapper catch?

I have fished for years out of flat-bottom jon boats, and the "Bass Buster" style boats. I always enjoyed it. BUT, I just recently bought my first kayak! Now, the only thing keeping me from selling my boat is the ability to take someone with me. I would have never imagined how fun and ADDICTIVE it is to fish from a kayak.

I have paddled a Jon boat and there was nothing enjoyable about the experience.
Catch and release into the grease!
