going doen in a couple weeks, wanted to know if they are plentiful. I know the cooler months are best, but wanted to let my little girl to fish for something from the beach.

You will catch a lot on the peir

I use to catch them on purpose. In fact I really enjoy catching them. Plus, they are darn good eating!!

Those things can be found all up and down the coast. It's been awhile since I have been to Galveston, but I caught a whole mess of them off Mustang Island last weekend. So if they are biting there, odds are they are biting in Galveston.

For the most part, they are surf fish and hunt the shallows of the breaking surf for food. You can catch them in the first cut between the shore and the first sand bar, or the cut from the first sand bar to the second one.

The best way to catch them is to use a small jig head like you would use for 1" curly tailed grubs. Just use the jig head and nothing else. Put on a small piece of shrimp or squid and cast out between the cuts. Make sure you keep the line pretty tight. I like to reel it in slowly to keep it tight. Once they hit, set the hook and have fun!!!

Ok, good it's been YEARS since I have done it. I take crappie gear and fish for them... They r a blast on the proper tackle. Thanks guys

Definitely tons and tons in the surf. I use a sabiki rig (it has 4-5 hooks) with knuckle sized pieces of shrimp and pull them in two or three or four or five at a time. Mostly small ones, but every now and then you pull in a decent 10-11 incher and sometimes some drum and sand trout. Of course hardheads are in full force as well right now

We were at Sylvan last Saturday night and caught a few 11 plus inchers, along with a few smaller ones.

It seemed that you would cast to one spot and get little gaffies, next cast, move over a few feet and you were on to the whiting.

We used #4 owner Mutu light wire hooks, and just about any bait.
