Sinking hardwoods in larger lakes and rivers is a lot different than dropping them in ponds. I just feel weird about putting up a feeder on a large public water. I don't mind chumming a spot (especially for kids) when I get to the spot, but I've heard others say that when fish have a constant feed like that, you may as well try to mimic the food pellets instead of hoppers, minnows and natural forage cause they won't bite anything else if they have been conditioned on the feeder.

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
bless His Holy Name!

Some of my best producing crappie holes are baited twice a
year with 50# hay bails
After the bails rot away the blocks become permanent structure

My two pennies, drop some sort of wood or trees and start chumming. The easiest to use is bread. They will come.
