Was in Bayou Vista a few weeks back fishing the marshes in my Kayak. I noticed what I thought were reds turning and started stalking them but got no bites. They were all over the marshes in about 4 ft of water. My memory is a bit fuzzy on the exact behavior but they were tailing and turning but too far away for me to tell the shape or markings
of the tail. When I got back I called up my bro in law and he said they were probably gar. I didn't realize Gar lived in Salt. Is this true?

Very true. I've seen pictures of people catching them from the beach in the surf.

Interesting! I'm heading back out tomorrow so I'd be interested to see if they are still around. Do they just stay around the same area or move in / out with the tides?

...they move around. Seen them in the back off to the right of the railroad bridge in those flats as well as along the railroad tracks off to your left when you go under the bridge.
Usually when you see the Gar there are Trout in the area FYI!

...so good it tastes like it died screaming!

Really?? That's good to know. Do you look for slicks when going after them in that situation as well? And both those locations are exactly where I've seen them.

I just wanted to post this to help prove that gars do in fact roam the salt water. This was in San Antonio bay. We were catching reds, black drum, sharks and gar all in the same place. Made for a very fun day of fishing!

But these pictures were taken the same day same place...

Dude that boat is nuts. I'd like to see more pics. Did you build it?

Yeah, that was a crazy trip. One I won't forget soon!

That was a trip to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge by Tivoli. It's a super cool place, but pretty far away from everything! That weekend we went we were catching a lot of gar included with the saltwater fish. It wasn't until we caught a few that we tasted the water and could tell it not as "salty" as usual. We found out later that they got a ton of rain days before we went down there and I guess a lot of fresh water was draining into the bay.

But to add to the trip, I forgot to mention we were also catching sting rays and ran into a lot of jelly fish. Where we wade you have to go out about 100-150 yards. So if you get in trouble out there, you have a good distance to cover in waist deep water to get back to shore. I was joking with my buddies that we were waist deep in a pool of nothing but predators! And sure enough when we did finish for the day and got back to shore, there was a huge alligator sitting on the bank waiting for us!

And the boat...that is just a one of my crazy little boats I build. That one is not really made for the saltwater. It good for calm days on the bay, but it's not good in really rough chop. It's my little river cruiser. I made a deal with the designer that I would do a write-up about it in return for free plans. I took it down there mainly to get some shots of it and saltwater fish for an article I wrote. It's a funny looking boat, but practical as all heck. If you notice a line that runs from top to bottom on the side of it. That's where it breaks apart into two pieces! It collapse down so it can fit into a small hatch back, suv or pickup truck. I throw it in the back of my Ford ranger, tail gate closed and I don't even have to use tie downs. Also I live in a small apartment so I needed something that would fit in a small closet. So it's like having the portability of an inflatable boat but with a rigid hull (that won't pop!)

This is what it was really built for!...(and forgot to add, it also has a removable trolling motor mount for when I'm too lazy to paddle)

I originally wrote the article for the designer. He published it on his site but with time, he removed it to add new material. However, Duckworks Online Magazine got a copy and also published it. (Duckworks is a site dedicated to the hobby of boat building). I have posted this to this site in the past, just under a different section...
