What type of fishing are you planning on doing? Cabelas almost always has some type of combo on sale.

vrodtx, I have 5 fly rods. What are you fishing for? I'm a dozen miles down IH20 from you.

I have been contemplating getting into fly fishing as well. What type of setup would you recommend for me to chase sandies and lmb?

5 or 6 wt for sandies and average lmb's. If you ever plan to fish hybrids you way want to get a 7 or 8 wt. I like this web site www.flyshopcloseouts.com. You can get a good tfo combo for a decent price.

A 6wt will be good for everything. I use to do nothing but flyfish and have caught Striper up to 29# on a 6wt rod. I have caught many to 15 lbs on a 6wt using deceivers and clousers. If you plan on fishing for bass in thick cover, I might consider something a little heavier. I currently get by using just a 5 weight and a 6 weight but only use my fly rod for trout, bream and occasionally stripes below Texoma. I miss the good old days of being able to walk up to the teeth at granbury dam. The fishing was unreal back in the day......Man, I sound like my dad.. ..."back in the day"

The hardest lesson I learned was that in flyfishing the equipment really does matter. If you want to play, start out by spending the money on a decent rod and equally important, decent line. Those "starter sets" will do nothing but frustrate you. I think they were invented to keep people out of the sport. JMHO

Lots of good advice here. Good gear to start off with is my best advice. Cheap combos will only frustrate you. There's a reason they are cheap. I've only been fly fishing for 9 months, but to me, the 2 most important aspects of fly fishing are:
1) Learning proper casting technique 2) Don't get cheap on fly line; good quality fly line is very important. It's intended to last a very long time. I haven't changed out line in 9 months.
A 6wt is what I started with. Good all around rod for Texas bass. Mine's paired with a 7wf Rio Gold line.
I recently purchased a 4wt TFO to target smaller species.
Good luck!
