Yep, bigger is better in regards to your trolling motor. If you can afford the extra battery and the bilge area has the space go for it. Never heard someone complain they had too much trolling motor! Also your running time will be increased lots over the smaller 24v. My Ranger 521 w/a MK 101 36v lasts WAY longer on a charge then my 18' Ranger 361v did with a 24v 82lb MG.

I had to get a new TM not to long ago and went with an 80lb on my 20 footer. I wouldve liked to have gone with a 36 volt system but the added cost was too much for my budget. I would say the 80lb has done pretty well for the most part, but I try to not fish in heavy winds. I dont think I have ever NEEDED a bigger motor, but im sure it would be nice!

I've got a 101 on this boat but my last 20ft boat I never felt underpowered with an 82 MG. With good batteries I once trolled 6 miles on high when I ran out of gas thanks to a ground coming off my fuel gauge and it hanging at 1/4 tank hahaha. That 82 pulled me around just over 5 mph wide open and I never had an issue. I do love this 101 I have now but I don't see it as a must have.

Get the 36v and be done with it. Get a Troll Perfect" it is like adding power steering and works with either MG or MK

I have always had a 24 volt motor and it does fine even in the wind. I know a 36 would be better but the extra weight and cost are not worth it to me. I guess if I got use to a 36 I'd wouldn't be happy with less. I have no problem fishing all day in the wind but I take care of my batteries and make sure they are in good shape.
