I was there back in April. Did the grass ever take off at all?

I was there in May and the grass was starting in areas, less than a foot tall in the back of pockets. Went back in July and grass was in 14-16' and within a couple feet of the surface.

Yeah. I'm down there right now. Grass is getting thicker and if the lake fills up there will be several places that it is 10 - 20 ft tall for entire coves

Last week I was way up river in Mexico. I didn't see any grass but I didn't cover a lot of water and really didn't look too hard. I was fishing deep, steep banks and got into a little pattern doing that.

There was a ton of shad and the fish I caught looked really healthy. Like in the past, when Amistad fills-up about 30 feet it's going to be fantastic.

It will happen. All the grass that got started will grow 6" per week to reach the light table toward the surface. You have to know where all that grass was in order to find it happening. No one can see it now. It was all in the shallows out to 5 ft. now it is in 10 ft. and growing like crazy.

If the lake will not fill up too fast to block the light. Just about a couple of feet per week would be great. This would allow it to keep up with the water rise.

The top water bite in the shallows should be the ticket right now. Amistad Bass just keep coming to the shallows when the lake is on the rise and the grass is growing. It is like a factory to produce big stringers, but just in certain areas.
I will win the S.I.T. this year if the Hydri. gets to 20 ft. deep on my best spot. The area is loaded with big bass just waiting on the ledges to move in there.

Good luck on your search and keep up with the grass. Burn the gas and do the searching you want be sorry.

We fished several humps that were in 6-10 feet of water with grass growing all the way to the surface. We caught them on flukes, jerkbaits, crankbaits, worms, swimbaits, spinnerbaits, 1 jig fish. I think the only thing we did not catch them on was a topwater.

We threw spooks first thing Saturday morning, late Saturday evening, and early Sunday morning. Was the only bait we didn't get a hit on. Kind of surprised me throwing it above and in all of that grass.

Now I know you know this lake waaaaaaaaaay better than us. I was expecting a decent topwater bite and it just never happened for us.

I was down there last week and lost 3 tournament winning Bass in the grass on Spooks and Frogs. I got discusted and came home.
We caught everthing on Friday of course that touched the baits.

The top water bit has always been a thing of location on Amistad. It took me 12 days of running and gunning in 1998 to find that bit. Some where on that lake you can load the boat on each of the above mentioned baits. You just have to put the time in to do so.

That is why we back up every Spook cast with the pinch weighted Fluke. The Spook is exciting the big Bass and you don't even realize it. Then the Fluke does the catching. Your partner is putting that Fluke in every bush you bring the Spook by. It works every time when they refuse to blow up on the Spook. It is a tool and you have to use it to the fullest extent. Never put it down the first hour each morning. Just follow it up with a Fluke and see what happens.

The odds are about 50 - 50 on the lake getting 20 ft. deep grass before the middle of September. The water will have to slowly rise at least 10 more feet.

So what you're saying is I want my partner throwing the spook in the front of the boat and I want to be in the back of the boat with the fluke. I'll have to give that a shot.

I remember when I was a kid I used to fish a local bayou in Louisiana that was loaded with grass. I pretty much only fished a buzz bait and a slugo. If a fish hit the buzz bait and missed it, I would set down the rod and toss in the slugo. I bet over 75% of the time I'd catch that fish on the slugo.

I threw a frog Saturday morning too for a little while. Didn't take me long when I saw all of that grass at the surface, I just knew it would be the ticket. Guess we just weren't in the right locations.

Sounds like ill just follow you since you on the winning stringer. Lots of good sticks going to fish SIT, kinda strange saying your going to win it, you may not even catch a fish. Anyway, thanks for the info, ill be sure to have spooks and flukes within arms reach.

I've been known to not catch a Bass on Amistad; that is for sure.
I won the SIT in 2003 and the lake is at the same level. Now the grass just needs to get right and I will do it again on the same spot.
