Well, after much research and staying within my budget, I purchased a Percetion Sport Pescador 12 (the 2008 WS Tarpon 120). I love it! I took it out to a local playa lake to paddle it and it did great. This was the first kayak I have ever been in so I have nothing to compair it to, but I can not image any other kayak handling any better. However, I do have a rather nit-picky question. My paddle put a lot of water in to my boat. Not splash, but when I would raise one side and lower the other water would drain on to my lap. Is this incorrect paddle mechanics, do I need a longer paddle or is this just the way it is. It is not a problem now but will be come October. Also, does anyone know of a place in Lubbock that carries racks that will fit in pickup beds. Thanks for all the help so far. We will be fishing Mineral Wells this weekend (if I can find a rack). Hope to see some of you there.

search for "kayak drip rings". Sounds like you don't have any in yours.

Drip rings are the little circular rubber pieces on either side between your hand and the blades that are meant to stop water from dripping down. However, I had a similar issue, as they don't work perfectly.
A longer paddle could certainly help, and honestly, will just make paddling more pleasant in general if yours is too short. How long is yours? I used a 240cm in my Pescador and it was great. I'd definitely recommend the paddle I had, a Werner Skagit FM 240cm. They're about $130 but will make your life way easier depending on what you're using now.
Also, in the winter, you'll want to be wearing some waterproof clothing of some sort. You're going to get splashed at some point, it's inevitable.
Also, be sure to put scupper plugs in the scuppers in the winter. And I ALWAYS had them in the two scupper under the seat no matter what the weather was like.
That's the best entry kayak on the market around that price point if ya ask me. I loved mine!

A truck bed extender is an alternative to a rack.

search for "kayak drip rings". Sounds like you don't have any in yours. +1. Also would recommend taking a look at your stroke. Having an efficient stroke means fewer strokes and likewise less chance of water in the boat. You want the entry of your blade into the water roughly at your feet - I see many people doing lots of short choppy strokes that have about half the time in the water of more experienced paddlers and they end up making up for the inefficiency by making many more strokes. Likewise, you want to eliminate a lot of splashing/turbulence during your stroke - a good solid movement of the paddle keeps splash to a minimum and takes the energy that is resulting in splashing (moving water through air) and puts it into moving your boat (moving water against water). As for drip rings - I have best experience positioning them just a few inches above the water for a normal stroke. Make sure they are still positioned outside the boat(should be easy on a 28" wide boat). If this is not possible, you may need to consider a longer paddle.

The shape of the blade will make a difference if you're a low angle or high angle paddler.

I have 2 240 CM paddles with drip guards from ACK, which I installed when I built these paddles. One weighs 30 oz and the other ways 27 oz. My ONNO is 230 CM and weighs 23 oz. I occasionally get water in the cockpit from the paddle but not much. I do get a lot of water in the cockpit when I go side saddle to put fish in the cooler but it goes out the Mirage drive well. I recently took a trip in a rental kayak up in OK. The paddles were short and heavy and the drip guards slipped all over the place, and I got a lot of water in the kayak off the paddle. And although the kayak was an SOT it had no scuppers, so I ended up sitting in a puddle all day. Monkey butt.
RealBigReel I don't go too fast but I go pretty far.

Thanks for all the comments. I am very new at this and did not realize what the drip-rings were for. I will move them in a bit and I bet that does the trick. Thanks.

Keep your eye out for open invites on here near you... despite all the research I did before/when I got my first boat, I learned 10x that much from my first few outtings with guys who knew what they were doing. Just about everyone on here is happy to help a new guy out. I'm heading to Texoma tomorrow at 4:30pm if you're anywhere near there and free. I'd be happy to answer questions and try to get on some fish. Edit: Scratch that, I see you're in Lubbock. Don't tell me you're a Red Raider... I take back everything I said.

I sprayed my paddle blades with a substance called "never wet" and water doesn't stick to them at all. Really cut down on the drip.

Aggie, LOL, thanks for the invite. My son and I will be fishing Mineral Wells on Saturday. It will be our first fishing trip with the kayaks. Can't wait!
