I know most people would sneeze at this one. But caught tons of fish over 4 lbs in Louisiana growing up and could never break the 5 lb mark. So when I started fishing Texas this year with some friends from work, my goal was to first break the 5 lb mark. Took 4 trips with them to 3 different lakes before it finally happened.

Not that familiar with the lake, was told we were just east of the 277 bridge in cow's creek.

Set the hook on my helicopter lure and she came flying out the water. I immediately knew I had the biggest bass of my life. It looked huge in the net and was slightly disappointed when I saw the final weight on the scale, but I accomplished my goal.

Any guesses on weight?

Fishing was pretty tough, picked up a small fish here and there. Other than 1 or 2 healthy 2 lb chunks, every fish we caught were SKINNY.

Great fish. Congrats! You really caught it on a helicopter lure?

Nice fish...I'll guess 24 inches, and over 8 lbs.

Congrats. Looks a little thin so I'd say around 7.5. Just wait until you catch one like that in January--she'll be pushing double digits.

I was out on Friday and caught a nice one too. I could only get bit on chatterbaits and when I lost the only one I had didn't get anything else but whites. If you spend some time on Amistad in the future try way up river in Mexico -- lots of great water up there.

Congrats on the catch. My guess is about 6 1/2.
My PB was in 1989 in North Carolina. 6 lbs 12 oz.
So far the biggest I've managed since then is 5 lbs 7 oz.

I believe that is Hwy. 90 bridge and Cow creek is 14 miles from there. Hwy. 277 is in the San Padro basin.
Now if that info. is to confuse us; I will buy the Helicopter Lure story.
Great Bass; Congrads.

You got me Mr. Harper,

We were just east of the hwy 90 bridge and caught it on a jerkbait.

Was told if I didn't say I caught it on a helicopter lure east of the 277 bridge they wouldn't take me fishing with them again(although we all knew most familiar with the area would see the hwy 90 bridge in the background). But since I'm an honest fisherman, I can't stick with that story forever.

Also the scale we had said 5 lbs 2 oz. Unfortunately we didn't have anything on the boat to measure it with. Took a few pictures and watched her swim away. I still can't get over how long she was, and even though she was skinny, still kind of stunned the scale said only 5 lbs 2 oz.

I've measured enough 26-27" redfish to know that she was easily 23" and possibly 24". Guarantee I will have a tape in my bag from here on, and will probably take me another 33 years to catch another...........................

But regardless I finally broke the 5 lb mark and was a happy camper.

At least it wasn't 4lb 15oz! Nice catch, time for a new goal!

Fish on hook! Reel him in, slowly.
