Get it out if you possibly can, try going up through the gills to get a different angle, and if they're bleeding, give them some mountain dew. Bass love the Dew!

My son caught a fish the other day, and as he was unhooking the fish something was poking him. Guess what? A rusty hook fell out of the fishes mouth. So after seeing that, I have to believe it is true! I agree, you should always get it out if possible, but that made me believe that its not a total loss if you can't get it.
