Never did the dip - but I smoked for 40+ years and the best I can say is find a substitute and re-train your brain.
Sugar-free cough drops worked for me - just a drop between your cheek and gum - works as long as a dip and a couple Serenity prayers later you're movin' on down the highway. . . . .
Whatever works for you, it'll work for you if you want it to. I never thought about trying that. Nobody died today. Getting better. $15.00 I did not spend since Friday. Still a bit jumpy. Worried about talking on the phone tomorrow without a dip in. It was my routine, Get up throw in a dip. Drink coffee. Get another dip. More coffee. Heart racing. Another dip. 10:00, eat something.

Just told my wife to shut up. Well, actually I did not actually say that. She looked at me and I opened my mouth and showed her my gum and she smiled. It made me feel good and know imam doing the right thing. I held up my middle finger where she could not see it though.

Mud, I quit the dip last June when we went on our annual family vacation to Galveston. I was miserable that entire week, but there was plenty going on with the family to distract me. My girls were so proud of me and that helped move me plow thru some mental 'setbacks'. Additionally my dentist showed me a few photos from an oral surgeon friend of his who has carved up a few people's mouth trying to extricate cancerous sores/lesions!!!! That was the show stopper right there!!!! Hang in there man, and spend the money you'll be saving on dip on something nice for yourself or your family!

Mud - I am a year and a half in. I was very edgy, super grumpy. Actually, my wife says the day I quit, I changed quite a bit. My friends say the same. I do notice I am way edgier and much more grumpy. I was always happy going dude.
I wish I hadn't changed, but I am glad I am not tied down tothe snuff anymore. Double edge sword I supose.

I think I am seeing what you are talking about in your post. Seems very true. Change is hard.

For me, quitting the welfare bear was more about the habit than the nicotine... so I bought some herbal stuff. Just a bunch of flavored, ground up leaves or some such like that. It helped to curb down the habit to the point of quitting all together. Might give that a try.

I'm on week 4 sisnce the end of Duck season. This is the time I usually relapse, it seems harder for me around now. I will still smoke a cigar here and there, but need to be carefull that nicotine in my system is a tricky little bish.

Hope your still free of it! I know how you felt wanting to kill. 2 weeks after I quit, I had to go back up to the County Tax Assessors office and apologize to a lady, because I blew up on her bad, the day before. It's tough, but we can do it, there's a lot on here that has, and they got our backs. Thanks for starting this forum too!
