Spawning takes place from mid-March to mid-May, beginning when water tem peratures reach 60F and peaking between 68 and 72F. Crappie spawn in one to six feet of water, usually in the backs of protected coves, shallow island areas, under overhanging banks, on or near flooded brush and timber, or near sub merged vegetation. They usually nest in colonies and females may spawn more than once.
I'm pretty sure they mean twice in the spring. Releasing eggs a few week apart.

Right. We may never truly know. Come on FOLK's...... We are dealing with "FEMALES" if you think you can figure one out. you are just not very Smart!!!!! "IT AIN"T GONNA HAPPEN".... The average female changes their mind an average of 4-8 times a minute...
I would agree with you , but then we would both be WRONG !!!!!

About all I can add is this year we loaded the boat on Feb 3rd and that was water 6' to 10'. When this lake has a good bed of Hydrilla I have caught them in the same water depth all the way until the first week of June. Since we lost out Hydrilla a few years back and then the drought hit which didn't help, they have moved out a bit earlier than when they can burry into that thick grass.
Spawn in Fall, don't know.

for what its worth, the lone crappie in my tank turned noticeably darker during the spring months, so I now know its a male. he also became more aggressive, started throwing his toys out of the tank, holding up signs saying free Fred. just being really bad.. haha
joking abt throwing toys, but he really did turn almost black, and got really feisty.

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

[/quote if you believe crappie only spawn to 6 feet of water, you will learn a whole lot if you fish spring in texas. white crappie can spawn in 14 feet of water if they need to. the clearer the water the deeper they spawn.

What does your researcch tell you about why most of us have all caught crappie in summer, fall, and dead winter months full of eggs?? I caught some 3wkds ago with full dark yellow sacks. No noticeable sperm sacks in males but I wasn't really looking either. Didnt care a bit...but no doubt about the eggs, ask my dachshund, he ate em all. He likes crappie caviar. There have been several posts over the last month about crappie having eggs...so it ain't just 1 or 2 crazies claiming to have seen it. U say youbwant Proof of it happening. You asked for pics of the eggs on a dated newspaper.. why dont you just say were lying or whatever it is u think. I know beyond a shadow of doubt that females develop and hold eggs throughout the year and most who fish outside of spring know it too...surprised a crappiekilla like you hasn't seen it. The truth lies in how long it takes the eggs to develop from the starting point until the actual spawn occurs. Some just can't take the truth.

Questioning established truths is an ancient pastime and we have benefited greatly by doing so. I don't know how many times crappie spawn but I know there are exceptions.
Veritas est adaequatio rei et intellectus (Truth is the equation of thing and intellect) - Thomas Aquinas
To say of what is that it is not, or of what is not that it is, is false, while to say of what is that it is, and of what is not that it is not, is true" - Aristotle
Biology and more specifically marine biology is a science. Scientists sort of put the truth in a constant state of revision.
The earth is flat, don't fall off.

Maybe scientists don't have time and fund to see or care whether crappies spawn once or twice a year. They all glued to where the money is: "global warming"...ooops...let me correct that term when they couldn't sell it: "climate change"

I do have a meeting with the local fish biologist next week we are discussing the crappie in the trinity river seems they couldn't sample crappie in the mighty TRINITY river thru awl the "SCIENTIFIC" methods they employ and ... and then ....uh oh ....NOT AGAIN the possibility of a fall crappie spawn ....ROFLMBO mother nature proves us wrong time an time again studies and "scientific" evaluations mean nothing to her she has god by her side an does as she pleases .... and this is the ACTUAL TRUTH ,,,,
