I came across this fly pattern and adapted for a crappie jig. I probably should have used a #4, but I tied it on a #6.
Clamp a sewing needle in your vise to make the end of the tail. The needle I used was pretty big and I had a hard time getting the tail off. It was almost like starting a jig, except I didn't lay a thread base down on the needle. I started with chartreuse thread, but decided to overlay a layer of hot pink to make the tail really pop. It was challenging wrapping the tail because it was like I was tying left handed. I tied off the tail and added some glue. Like I said, it was challenging getting the tail off the needle.
Next, I cut the tail a little longer that what I needed. I trimmed it down to about 2.5 inches or so.
Then, it was just like tying a regular jig, instead of feathers, I used the tail. I did use a little piece of 'flash' in this jig, the flash being a piece of pearl easter basket grass.
The chenille is pearl chartreuse, probably about a size five, which is considerably larger than what I normally tie.
Also, the tail is a piece of black chenille, again, about a size 5 or maybe a little bigger. it looks bigger in the picture because of the shadow.
