I bought my H2O Mettle a couple years ago. It has been through a lot of good uses and after last week of pulling in monster sandbass at twok the reel is starting to show signs of wear and tear. I went bass fishing this morning and try to set the hook and you know the sound of a reel when the drag is set too low. Well that's what it was doing. The drag was set to about 70% max when it did this on a 2lb bass. Then I set it to 100%max and set the hook on my next bass which was under 1lb the reel did the same thing. So I was wondering what the return policy was for academy branded reels since the reel is a couple years old and I have no receipt.

Just take it back and exchange for another one. No recipt necessary and all they need is your drivers license. I returned/exchanged lots of stuffs with no receipt. Great return policy.

I could even return it if it looks used? It is a couple years old.

Would you take back a pair of $99.00 running shoes after wearing them the past 18 months and expect a refund because one of the shoelaces broke?
If I were the manager of that Academy I'd politely shake your hand, thank you for your business, and show you the door.
No hard feelings, just my >02.

Its an opinion based on your comment since we both don't know Academy's return policy for fishing gear or if they are warranty for a certain amount of years or maybe they came with a lifetime warranty. I did find something interesting while researching though. Here it is: http://www.2coolfishing.com/ttmbforum/showthread.php?t=381626

Yes. I just recently returned an H2O Mettle that I had been using for 6 years......in the salt water of Galveston Bay area's. I did have the receipt, and the box. But, I doubt they would have cared about the receipt. They didn't even ask for it. They told me to go get a new one. I had the receipt in the old box. So, when I got back to customer service I asked them for the old receipt back out of the old box. They didn't even realize it was there. They commented on how good the reel must be for it to last 6 years. The exchange went well, and they were very nice.

Read about it here: Academy exchange thread.

Thats taking it to an extreme, i know they have a very liberal return policy but if I knew I broke the reel from years of abuse than why would I try to take it back for a newer reel. Its action like this that will sure make them revisit there policies.

They have a lifetime warranty. Return it for a lifetime.

Well I got it exchanged today, all they ask was whats wrong with it. I told them that the drag has gotten weak on the reel and isn't working as good as it use to be, since I did buy it a couple of years ago. They told me to go get the new one and then go to customer service,so I got it exchanged. The only one left that they had was the display reel, so I took that one since it was better than the one I had now anyways.

Why is people making such a big deal about it? I told them the honest truth, its their decision and policy to accept the exchange or refuse it and they accepted. So until Academy gets their policies straighten up. Everyone of us will take advantage of their exchange/return/refund policies. Its just like Autozone, you put their parts in your car and overtime the parts fail and you return it for a new one which is warranty for life.

This is Academy's return policy... Not anyone on here's return policy. It is well known that they will take care of anyone who bought their h20 fishing products and exchange it for a new one. If they didn't want people doing this they would change their policy. And his example about Autozone is spot on. People came in and got new brake pads for free all the time because they have a lifetime warranty. Even though Autozone knows that brake pads wear out and need to be replaced all the time. It's their policy, if they dont like it they will change it! period.

I used to work at Autone. You would be amazed at the [censored] people return wanting a refund, exchange, or money back. And back when I worked for them we had to do it with or without a reciept or otherwise. customer was always right.

LOL. I used to work at Autozone too, the one off of Wheatland Rd! Some dude was acting like he was going to punch me when I kept asking him for his information so I could enter in his lifetime warranty for his alternator. Needless to say he didn't want it. So I think I entered the number 999-999-9999 into the system.

Ive had quite a few friends that worked at Academy and they've always told me that their return policy is amazing. You can return just about anything anytime you want. It doesn't surprise me that you were able to exchange your reel. Good for you, if Academy has an issue with people "abusing" their return policy then they can simply just change it. Oh and if you buy any academy brand items then youre basically covered for life. We would all be dumb if we didn't take advantage of it.

It's called standing behind your product. I don't know about any other retail places but I have returned H2O and Bass Pro stuff before and they haven't given me any problems at all!
