Second day with the new boat and I've got a question on throttle response. After I push forward out of neutral and I'm in the forward gear, which is about the 9 o'clock position, I get no throttle response until I'm at the 12 o'clock. Going forward through the rpms the engine is touchy, meaning small changes cause big rpm jumps. Coming down from top rpm around 7000 everything is totally different. As I descend through the rpms everything feels right. I get an equal deceleration for equal movement of the throttle. I notice that the location of the throttle does not equate to the same rpms going up as it does coming down from top rpm.
Is this normal?

Is this normal? yes but you are going to mess your dog clutch up..SLAM it all the way forward.. get on plane, then throttle back like you do coming off plane..I'm also wondering about the 7k's

60hp Mercury FourStroke Bigfoot
About the 7k's question. I'm totally confused now. This engine has onboard over-rev protection. Mercury specs it's open throttle at 6000rpm. Does this mean my tach is off?
As to slamming it forward this is a pontoon so there's no real point to attempting to plane it. Though at open throttle it almost acts like it could. Meaning its the only time the trim actually makes a noticeable effect on the bow.
Thanks for the replies btw.

he doesn't mean slam it wide open from neutral just when you put it in gear dont ease the shifter just shove it forward till you have it in gear as for rpms you need to get a bigger pitch prop the engine I believe it does have an over rev protection but it is not ment to be used you need to prop it so you cant turn more than 6000 rpms when you are loaded how you are planning on using it ie how many people, stuff, fuel, beer, and whatever else is going to be on the boat

if the rpm are jumping up then coming back down as you throttle up your prop is slipping, this is probably why you are seeing 7k on the tach. you need a prop with more pitch more than likely. does it start to blow out as you are trying to get on plane? after on plane does it do it intermittently and in turns? you are pushing a lot of weight with a little engine, get with steve and get it propped right. www.stevescustomprops.com

Just worked on a 2006 pontoon with same motor. was having rpm problems and found the blow-out ring was not installed when owner installed a new prop. These motors are real touchy on the prop you put on them. Have tag right there on the motor warning about using correct prop.

Just got it back from the shop. Tach was not calibrated correctly. No over speed incidents indicated on the computer. Thanks for the red flags on this!
