If you're just learning to cast I'd start with a five weight setup. Cabelas's and Bass Pro both have excellent starter packages that I feel are actually better for a beginner than a high dollar rig.

Get some poppers and trout flies; not dry flies but nymphs and wet flies. If you stick with it you'll expand your stock of flies.

Man speaks wisdom right there.

Agree with above posts. I'm fairly new to fly fishing too (about a year or so). I was fortunate enough to start fly fishing the Loop rod my Dad handed down to me. It's a 9'6" 6wt with 7wf Rio line.

Not to overwhelm you but there are a lot of things to think about when it comes to fly fishing. Leader, knots, tippet, flies, backing, how to cast properly, etc etc etc...the list can go on and on.

I started out with the basic flies. #6 black and olive wooly buggers, a few clousers and a few muddlers.

Do your research and watch videos. The first thing I did after I geared up, was learned to cast. Be patient, it'll take time. And HAVE FUN! Fly fishing is a blast.
