Just buy one of these, it's only a hair over $3,000. But I promise you won't ever call it too small. Expensive, yes! Small, no!

I agree Ketchn. Down imaging in our lakes is pretty much useless,Long Story short. I would much rather have SI.

Just in case you didn't know.
The SI units also have DI. So if you have SI, you have DI.

Now if we can just figure out how to hook this up to a 360 imaging unit.... Bigger is Better From the link: The MU-190HD features SXGA (1280 x 1024) screen resolution and a wide range of interface options available that include: 1 RGB analog, 2 DVI (Digital Video Interface) and 3 NTSC/PAL video inputs. The display may be used as either the main or remote display for a variety of marine equipment, such as Black Box Radar, Sounder, Sonar, or NavNet series. The unit can also display images from security cameras, DVD player, computers, or other peripheral video devices.

Wow, all you guys that are dissing on DI have probably never used it. It will show you fish on a structure when nothing else will. And before anyone launches an attack, I got no dog in this fight. Ernest is my fishing partner...grumpy and hard to fish with but he's my friend. And if anyone will go with whatever is new, Ernest will. I on the other hand am stubborn. Show me first. I didn't think SI made a difference 5 years ago, and was shown. I didn't think DI made a difference last year, and was shown. Can Ernest or myself catch crappie without all this, yeah, cause we did for 50 some odd years. Can we catch more cause we spent some $$ and bought the latest electronics, you bet. So bottomline; buy the best you can (and hide it from mama if you must) but if you think you can find and catch as many fish with a 5" Eagle, go fish a CAT tourney.

I have a DI unit and it is insanely better than the 2D that I had. That being said, if I had the money, I would have side imaging in a heartbeat. You don't want anything without GPS. To me, you could get by with a 2D/GPS combo, but with each step up you are seeing more.
2D- You can see that something is below youand how tall it stands.
DI- You can see exactly what's below you and whether or not there are fish on it.
SI- You can see what is below you or to the left right, and also see if fish are on the structure.
360 imaging- You get a circular view of everything around you. I believe this would be the first that could show you what is ahead of you. Ketchn coulda used that a few weeks ago for sure!

Yes, SI makes a big difference. I have a Lowrance HDS 7 and HDS 5. I use only the SI function and never sonar (in fact, I don't even know how to use sonar). The quality of the images on the screen alone makes it worth having. Plus it helps see to each side of the boat.
Now, with that said, you will have to take some time to learn it. I have been using it for a year and still have a bit of trouble reading the screen. But it has definitely helped me find fish. Scratch Benbrook then. If I can't use the boat 12 months out of the year I don't want the slip. I might be able to launch the platoon since the trailer has a ladder at the front of the boat. My last boat did not and I had a hard time getting out of it once I placed it on a trailer. So I went to a slip with it. I will try it and see after I pick it up. It should be ready Thursday or Friday for me to pick up. I do appreciate your advice. I might have made a mistake and signed a lease at Benrook since I did not know the slips were not usable the year around.

Try not to repeat what others had posted, but here is an example... What I installed at the bow and fished with for the last few months since I got my boat working again: This is what it you might expect to see: (note the brighter dots are fish clinching on the submerged timber... Sorry that I didn't take the pix from the micro sd card, but straight from my phone so it is NOT as clear as I wanted it) You just can't get this detail with regular sonar Been fishing for a while now without any electronic at the console, but that's about to change.... I got a new toy to install (hopefully today or by this coming weekend) Although I can't afford the big HDS yet (I'm a Lowrance fan), I more than happy and GRATEFUL to have side scan soon... Anything smaller is truly a waste of money. Hope your decision work out for you, but if I must repeat anything posted, the BIGGER the better as long as you can afford it!!!! Good luck!!!! I don't think I can get a 55" inch on it but I could get one of my 23" computer screens on it and they should work with an inverter.

Thanks for all who have commented. I have decided on the Humminbird 598ci HD SI Fishfinder since I am also buying a 24v 75lb 60" trolling motor this month. The two purchases will set me back close to $1600. Plus the other gear for the new boat will probably set me back another $500 or $600 since I let all my old gear go with the old boat when I sold it last year. I still have all my rods, tackle boxes, tackle, etc as I simply shifted to fishing barges while deciding what to do. I fished a lot of the lakes and the state park lakes over the last year but that just doesn't equal fishing from a boat. So I will buy the 5" screen for now and in a few months will buy a bigger screen for the console and move the 5" to the bow. Maybe by then there will be some price decreases or some good sales on this years models as the new models come out. Besides by then my wife will have forgotten that I spent over $20,000 this month buying and equipping a new boat.

SI make a world of difference. You can locate structure easier.

My 898 does everything I need it to do....
It gets the job done and is modest as far as pricing goes.
Would have bigger, but not cost effective for me....
I have fished plenty of tournaments where I was not familiar with lake, and was able to find at least 15 GOOD brush piles the day of pre fishing.
Brought in a good stringer on Tournament day!
I'm always in a good mood when I'm fishing. Kevin Kubiak Lakes Somerville and Granger, crappie guide 512-848-4469 www.hotcrappie.compro staff; proanglertackle.com
