I am starting a construction project at Aransas Pass and I figured rather than sitting an RV I would take up saltwater fishing. I would like any and all pointers for bay fishing in a boat and on foot. Specifically what bait to use, locations, etc.

Not to be a jerk... but there's a very helpful sticky on the top of this section of the forum. For those new to the salt water Those are general pointers on tackle and bait and such. Specific points, you might have to search and ask when over there, fish will move depending on the conditions.

When you catch a Hardhead, don't go trying to take it off the hook until you know what to do. Let someone around where you're fishing show you. They ARE NOT like channel cats. Although Channel Cats can stick you, Hardheads will stick you just by looking at it. Have you ever imagined taking a lit cigarette and putting it out on your hand? Have fun and be careful is all I'm saying. CF?

Fishing with a boat, kayak or wade/shore fishing? There are tons of flats nearby, channels, you could even go out to the jetties and beach.

I'll have to read that beginner saltwater thread later, but in glancing over it, it seem to focus on tackle and rigs.
You may want to find a guide for your first trip. Let them know you're new to saltwater fishing and ask him to show you the ropes.
I do like the tackle recommendations in the beginner thread, but I didn't see anything on tide and wind.
For the most part an incoming tide and outgoing tide in the 1' range is a good movement of water.
I like outgoing because water is draining out of a march, and so is the bait fish. This attracts the predator fish (reds and specks.)
Wind is important because it can affect tidal movement. You may have a tidal predicition of a 1 foot drop, but the wind can come in and mess that up. To much wind in one direction and the tidal movement is nill.
be back to finish this later. going fishing

While I agree, it is awful just to cut them up for no reason other than to think you alone are going to deplete the population of hardeads. I don't think it is illegal, unless size is involved, to kill fish or other animals for no reason. Really when you think about it, it happens quite often. Its really sad, but people hunt for trophy animals, cut barbs off sting rays, even in a different version animals are euthanized all over every day, sick or not.
Happy fishing!

The population of hardheads doesn't need to be depleted. If you're catching them, you're fishing a slack tide or using the wrong technique/bait.

Bottom of the prohibited acts section: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/regulations/fish_hunt/fish/general.phtmlI'm not trying to prove you wrong or start an argument, I just want the OP to avoid following incorrect advice.

Bottom of the prohibited acts section: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/regulations/fish_hunt/fish/general.phtmlI'm not trying to prove you wrong or start an argument, I just want the OP to avoid following incorrect advice. Its pretty vague and about the comment it list things it calls "violations", which this is does not, it says "unlawful" "Waste of fish - It is unlawful to leave edible fish or bait fish taken from the public waters of the state to die without the intent to retain the fish for consumption or bait." So according to that it is illegal to take fish unless for consumption or bait, apparently mounting fish is illegal too? No argument needed, I don't think the post was intended to be serious, nor do I think or hope the OP would take that advise. I certainly dont take part in those actions, and I imagine anyone who puts enough time into fishing, that they read these forums doesnt take part in those kind of actions either.
Happy fishing!

You know I've been fishing for 2 yrs wich isnt long but still I find new rules everytime I go it seems like. I think when it comes down to it think smart and have a legit/ common sense reason for what your doing. Other than that id read the 1st page about tackle and all. What I also like to do is search google earth for dif.waters and see what I find when I get there but that's half the fun for me.

Every time I get a license I also get the book that comes with it. I make sure I read it, especially what pertains to salt water fishing.
They also list what has changed so to highlight to those who just skim the book.
If I can't find my book, I look it up on the website. Better to double check than to be in violation.
