a jig can be fished from top to bottom, and there is really not a wrong way to fish a jig. most of the time you have to let the bass tell you how they want it. sometimes you have to drag the jig, never getting it off the bottom. other times, lift and drop type retrieve is required. while other times, a more lift and let the jig coast back down will trigger bites. retrieve types will depend sometimes on the terrain you are fishing, meaning is it flat or steep, brushy or rocky, and other factors. if you fish soft plastics, a jig can be fished in the same manner that you would a worm or crawdad. jigs can be made to look like a crawdad or shad, and you should consider what the bass you are trying to catch are eating. jigs are one of the best fishing tools to use. never go fishing without them.

What bo james said is spot on.. but just my .02 i usually have the most success working it like a craw... which is kinda a pop pop let sink and sit then pop pop again.. ive gotten more bites this way but it really does depend on the circumstances.. ive caught fish with a jig by just retrieving it really fast cause i thought i was out of the strike zone. It all depends on what the fish want..

Jigs are really versatile and can be worked to imitate bait in all three water columns, remember the season, remember the structure and cover and remember the bait that occupy those habitats. Above all, stick with it and be patient.

I've always felt that at anytime when throwing a jig, there are other baits that will catch more fish. However, jigs always tend to produce higher quality fish and are well worth the time to master. You may not get bit as much, but when you do it makes up for it.
As elite1cal said, stick with it and be patient. It'll pay off.
