I'm taking a couple boys on the jetty trip out of galveston next week. I have never done the jetty trip so I was wondering what I should take to help our chances of catching something. Thanks!

Me and a buddy went a few months back and fished the jetty right across the street from the Academy. Be careful of the rock edges because it gets really slick and waves do crash up on the rocks. rod: I used a 7 and 10ft surf rod. I liked my 10ft better to get further out. reel: spinning with 30lb braided line. tackle: 3-5 oz weights. spider and pyramid. spider weights work well but are expensive- close to 3-5$ each. I think I used 7/0 hooks to be able to get a lot of bait on. I also used a metal leader. bait: squid and shrimp . Squid stays on better/tougher.
We only caught some catfish but it was fun. Another guy landed a sheep head. There are sharks there so that's why I used a metal leader.
You can also fish the piers. The pier closest to the new pier with the amusement park on it costs 10$ a person (beer allowed on this pier). The other one going south costs 12$ a person.
We fished the pier at night when the high tide was starting up. There are a lot of sharks and reds. Saw 2 reds come up that were about 40 inches long. We tried shrimp but the little fish eat it fast and it doesn't stay on hooks well.
Disclaimer: I am no expert at surf fishing at all. It was my first time going and learned a lot. I can only pass on what I learned so far. Me and my buddy had a lot of fun and are going back. We feel we know what to do better next time around.
I hope all of this helps a little. Jp.

Ok, cheap plug here, click on my siggie and you can get some very good, inexpensive weights .......
I usually fish the pier on 91st, and have pretty good luck, haven't been skunked yet, but have come home with an empty cooler, the way of fishing, ya know?

There's a difference in the jetties and the rock groins along the beach.
I love the Galveston jetties. Just go out there with live bait, and a Carolina rig. You'll catch something if the water is decent.
The birds and the guides follow mr out

Sorry should have been more specific. We're going to go on the party boat that goes to the jetties. They supply gear and bait I was just wondering what else I could bring along to help our chances.

We went back in June and caught some big sharks and reds. Cut bait and live bait will get you some good fish.

bring one of your own poles and throw some lures. Touts, spoons and top waters. If you get into any good green water you might hook a spec. But if its elbow to elbow may be tough casting. On those boats they fish straight down the side of boat. There will probably be may species of fish caught with sharks and stingrays thrown in, and always hardheads

bring your own pole to catch the usual fish and on there's I would bring some mullet along to strap on there pole for something larger.. also bring a towel to wipe hands off.. the squid gets messy at times..also some pliers would be nice instead of waiting for deck hands to help..Good luck hope you have a good trip..
