Using a 30lbs line and 40 lbs leaders, 3 1/2 in. hooks. Using live shrimp) to cut mullet anything the cast net gets within shore that fair game.

I use a medium rod. I've caught some bull reds with it and small sharks. I use 30# braid with a 30# mono leader. It works great.

As far as trout are concerned, I prefer a medium action rod myself because the mouths of speckled trout are softer than say that of Largemouth Bass or Redfish. To your dismay, you can horse Specs if you are not careful and rip the hooks right out. Remember to play the fish with the line and rod, not the reel. Make sure your drag is set appropriately so that there is some give.
My medium action rods have worked fine for both Redfish and Speckled trout. I have also used stiff rods for Redfish such as those one uses for topwater fishing and plastic worm fishing when fishing for Largemouth Bass.
I think this is good advice, but I am not an expert by any means. I prefer to fish with fairly light line but do recommend steel leaders for trout or at least 30lb or 40lb mono-filament leaders. If there is any chance of running into Spanish Mackerel, use a steel leader that is 2'long. During my most recent jetty fishing experience, I kept running into Mackerel even when I was trying not to. It is a bummer to hook one and have it cut your line.

Ok im using a 7" action medium (10_25 lbs line)shakespeare, what kind of fish are you catching with yours? That's a 25lb line class rod, it is good for inshore and pier fishing if you use a net to retrieve the fish, don't use it to hoist the fish up. I use 20lb braid myself, but it is expensive to fill a reel with it. 12 to 20lb mono works good too. Usually needs a bigger reel though.

I used 30 lbs test and could even go down to 20~25 lb. rod works great if the fish would bite today!
