Might be replacing my nephews lower unit on his '87 125 hp Force. Will other year models work? Or other horsepowers?

You might check a parts site like http://MarinePartsPlus.com and compare the part numbers between different year models. Sometimes they will mention under a particular part other years or models it will work with.
