My former trolling motor was a 24v requiring 2 batteries. My current trolling motor is a 12 volt. If I'm plugging it in the 12 v port, would I need 2 new batteries or could I just buy one?

If I understand the question correctly, one should work if it's connected to the right leads.

That's what I'm asking. Should I just tape up the other leads ?

What other leads? You shoud only have 2 leads going to the front of the boat from the battery compartment.
On the 24 volt set-up there should be a short jumper lead connecting the batteries in series.Just remove the jumper between the 2 batteries and hook up the leads going to the front of the boat to the one battery.
If you have a circuit breaker, then hook up the lead from the breaker to the battery.

Are there two places to plug in your TM on your boat? One marked 12v and one marked 24v? If so the boat manufacturer has probably wired it so that the 24v port is in series and the 12v port is in parallel. Your 12v TM will last longer on a single charge with two batteries wired in parallel.

My original set up had four wires but with my new plug it only uses two. What other leads? You shoud only have 2 leads going to the front of the boat from the battery compartment.

I'd alternate positive and negative to the battery until I got juice up front.
