headed to corpus in a couple of days and we want to attempt to drive down PINS some one day. My question is are there any general tips or advice for driving on the sand that makes it easier and less likely to get stuck? Also is there any easy way to get unstuck as long as you don't dig yourself too deep into the sand? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Bob

This link will explain better than I can Driving in PINS I've been there twice, only drove once in the sand, but it was 15miles down and with a loaded small SUV AWD (mitsubishi outlander 2004). It wasn't hard, but I have some experience driving on sand, I saw higher clearance 4x4s struggling. The sand conditions will dictate a lot. I would recommend not going alone, just in case you get stuck. Bring an air compressor in case you need to deflate your tires a little. The floor mats under the tires also work for traction in a pinch, but 2x6 boards can provide more leverage and longer traction.

the sand close to the water line is prob the most dense and easy to drive through... just watch out for the people camped up on it.

My tip to add is knowing the tide pattern will be helpful. Low tide will give you more packed sand to drive on and high tide will give you less to no packed sand for driving. Packed sand is no different than driving on a dirt road. If driving in loose sand as long as you are moving the throttle is your friend however as soon as your tires are spinning and you are not moving the throttle will quickly become your enemy. If you do find yourself stuck dont keep trying and keep spinning your tires. Try backing out keeping the tires on the path you got to where you got stuck. Getting anything under you tires will help. The previous mentioned floor mats is a good tip for this. I again, always recommend working backward on the ground you have already packed down some with your vehicle. Bob are you going down in a 4 wheel drive?
PS Driving in the dunes is a big no/no.

Good advise. Always have a tow strap. Also 5 gallon bucket. If ya get stuck in dry sand you can poor water around the wheels to help with traction.
