My wife and I net almost every fish we catch. She gets very sour when a fish comes off at the boat and with the net, we lose very few fish. However, using the net does not seem to be the norm for all crappie fishermen.
I see video of lots of guys hoisting their fish into the boat and not using the net. I have been in the boat with folks that only break out the net on the biggest fish.
So what do you do? Use the net or not? Why not use the net if you do not? And how do you keep those fish from throwing the hook when you hoist them up and they break the water surface?

Why fix something that's not broken? If you have it use it!

There are days like today that I would have liked to have a net but for me it is just one more thing to trip over in the boat. Not as agile as I used to be.

You would kick yourself for letting a poorly hooked 3lber fall back in, all because you were doing what everyone else does...I have one...and if I feel I need it, I don't hesitate to use it. On days when fishing is tough, if its 10 inches I'm netting it.

To each his own... Netting will slow you down. Most crappies spit out the hooks while on surface. Get ya a rod with backbone and yank them over the boat in one smooth action from deep to top and in the boat. No flip no flop!!! Occationally, you will have one that break your line as you try to lift in the boat (assuming it is a 2#+, but that really boiled down to angler error for not checking the line and retying the line) Notice how professional bass anglers will yank all their catches in the boat nowadays? Yes, especially during tournament! Then again, it's just my opinion...

we mostly jerk fish in the boat in a smooth sweeping motion .... but we also yell for the net if we think its a whale at times .... I will usually take out my net if I think there might be big fish lurking .... so I think its probably one of those things that is to each his own ,,,,,

I throw back a lot of fish nowadays and give away most of the fish that are put in the box. When I was younger and hadn't caught many fish and didn't have much experience landing them losing one, especially a nice one, was a big deal. Now that I fish more often and have landed quite a few, the sight of a fish coming to the boat is not as foreign to me. It would be different if a tournament win were on the line and granted that the use of a net were allowed.
So I opt not to use a net and only keep the one Ketchn gave me on board for his sake. I like the idea of the fish having a chance to escape and the uncertainty of landing it adds to the thrill of the catch. However, my father would come completely unglued if he saw the reckless way I handled a fish while getting it to its final destination, the ice chest. As a post depression child his view of not losing a fish differs greatly from mine and God only knows what Grandpa would say if he saw me now!
Nothing wrong with using a net, sometimes we work hard at catching a mess of crappie and are keenly aware of what they are going to taste like when we get them to the table. No need letting that tasty fish get away at the last minute!

Nothing wrong with using a net, sometimes we work hard at catching a mess of crappie and are keenly aware of what they are going to taste like when we get them to the table. No need letting that tasty fish get away at the last minute! All Of These Reasons..... I use #10 Braided Line which keeps my line from breaking off, and when hung up, it will bend the hook, so I don't lose many Jigs, either. Then about 3 years ago, I went to using #1 or #2 sickle hooks on ALL Custom Jigs or Jig Heads I have made. Since then, I get a lot deeper hook set, into the solid part of a crappies mouth and rarely ever hook a fish in the paper part of the mouth. Makes hooking dinks a little harder, but that's ok, not looking to catch those anyway. The 3-4 lakes I fish, have good numbers of 2# - 2.5# crappie, and I catch my share of them. I just lift them into the boat. I won't say I have never lost a fish at the boat, but can't remember ever losing one lifting into the boat, and in the last 3 years, if I get a hook-up, that fish is coming with me. keith

+1 Same here, no net 99 percent of the time. Now if I'm running low on the jig of the day and a big ole cat starts to do the alligator roll on me, I call for the net to be drug outta the front box. Big bass, I'll lip'm Monster crappie lift'm

I don't use a net. Most of the time, when I do have a good one, and try to get it out, while fighting the fish, I end up getting it tangled in one of the other rods on my deck, or hooked on something, or make a mistake in my fighting, so I just lift them in. Using the sickle hooks, most of them are hooked good enough to flip in the boat. I've lost a few, but also got a 10.3 bass in on 4lb line. I've since gone to 10lb braid (just spooled 12lb Bonehead to try, but decided not to go).

I always have a net handy...and to me, it is where the fish is hooked...if he is hooked in the top of the mouth, I flip him in the boat, if he is hooked in the corner or bottom lip, I use a net...
