I finally did it. I saw them tailing and cast right in front of him and he went for it. It was a good fight on my 3wt. Caught in him on a black headstand nymph.

thanks for the ID on that. I had no idea that it was a red horse. Wish I would have because it is close if not over the state record. Guess I will have to go back to that spot and catch another. There were a lot there.

Good test for the 3wt. Congrats on the first redhorse. They are a "good indicator," of a healthy water system.

lb for lb i think red horses fight harder than carp I think the fact that they are almost always caught in moving water helps the fight a little as well.

Lots of nice redhorses in the Guadalupe. In fact, TPWD Fisheries Biologist Steve Magnelia calls the Guad a "world class redhorse fishery." Trout like to mingle with the redhorses when they spawn, so one frequently catches one while fishing for trout, especially when fishing deep with small, dark nymphs.
