I am a recent college grad and moved to Houston from Louisiana, where i fish at least 40 days a year. I do not have a place to keep my boat or my kayak, and would like to at least surf fish this weekend as the itch is driving me insane. I would like to drive to Galveston to fish the surf and have NO idea where I can get access to the beach or whther it is even worth it. I fish the surf a good bit in Grand Isle and fish topwaters and artificials almost exclusively, so any information is appreciated. HELP ME CATCH MY FIRST HOG TROUT IN TEXAS!!!

Welcome to Texas bud. Half my family is in Lafayette so I know what you mean about the fishing down there! You'll find some friendly folks with good advice on here. Depending on where you are staying and how long you want to drive and spend in gas, you can drive down to Galveston, Surfside, or any one of several spots to fish piers, jetties, surf, or even launch the kayak. I myself am new to the kayak since I just got my KC12 (made in Baton Rouge and built for the marshes).
As for access points I mostly fish jetties but ice seen folks out on Surfside wade in and you can get there by following 288 south all the way down to 332 and it will take you right to the county park.
My best advice is to search on here for the topics and you'll find. LOT of help. Heck there is even a fella who has a heck of a map link for kayak launching spots.

I was in the same situation as you about 12 years ago. Have fished GI all my life and had to find out first hand some spots to surf fish around Galveston/Surfside. In Galveston, go west of 61st street towards Jamaica beach and hit the beach accesses after the State Park. About a 10 mile drive from 61st. If younwanto, go across San Luis Pass Bridge into Surfside. ($2.00 Toll fee) Hit any of the accesses there. You can drive on the beach here much more than in G'ton. It reminds me of fishing Elmer's Island or Fourchon Beach. Use what you would in GI surf. Live bait is good. Tops and plastics work too. Bait shops on 61st st. in G'ton and on Hwy. 332 in Surfside. Good luck!!

Thanks for all the help guys! @ squirrellman, my buddy Gaines Garrett is one of the founders of that kayak company, and they are absolutely unbelievable. Tide is a little funny this weekend, but im gonna try anyway. Is it quicker to go on the east side of bolivar to get to the Penn. and does the ferry run 24/7?

You can leave your boat and kayak at my house.:) lol. Seriously though I am about 15 minutes from the boat ramp in Baytown. It gets you into the bay system. McFaddin beach is about 1hr from there as well. Galveston Surf is an hour the other way. Fishing can be good depending on the wind. Lately not so good so we stick around some spots in the bay. What side of houston are you coming from? The ferry is 24/7

My mother in-law use to have a beach house down about 16 miles down from the seawall south on Galveston Island. Some of the best trout fishing I've ever had was wading out in the surf when the green tide comes in. There are numerous beach access areas past jamacia beack all the way down to san luis pass and several bait shops that open up early or some never close in the summer. Wade out to the third sandbar and if the green tide is in you will have a ball! there is a good bay access area for kayak and wade fishing if you go down to 8 mile road(its name is 8 mile road and it's 8 miles from the seawall), take a right back to the bay side and go all the way to the very end, turn left at the dead end, that's sportsman road, take it to the vey end, there is a cul de sac, unload there, then park on the south side of the road, I use to catch trout, reds, and my favorite (flounder) there. If you get real desperate go all the way to san luis pass. Great wade fishing, but the current is dangerously stong.

Welcome to Texas bro... you'll find em'.
Surfside area isn't bad and you can drive the beach, might need a 4x. Surfside jetty, The mouth of San Luis pass and the back side of the pass. Swift Currents and steep drops off the sand. half dozen people have already lost their lives this year there. You won't be you are careful. I also like the south jetty, There's tons of places and access.
Have fun

You guys are all awesome. I live in the heights and will be driving all that way, but live to fish so i'm going regardless. To make matters worse, my dad just bought an offshore Robalo this week to tempt me back home so I at least have to see enough down there to keep me around. Seriously though, thanks for all the help and good luck!
