There is no right or wrong way....but here is one way:

1st: Get some buddies...you're going to need some help.

2nd: Get a decent size cedar tree and cut it in 1/3rds. (Any other tree or condo will work)

3rd: Place tarp in boat then place tree in boat and wire weight to the trunk of tree

4th: Transport to spot and drop in the water

A 2"x6" across the boat, with one end sticking past the side by a couple of feet make it pretty easy to get it in the water as well.

This! Especially on fiberglass boats. Keeps the weight from coming back and banging against the boat.

Assuming the material will float, I tie a long rope to the material (tree for example) and the other end to a cleat on my boat. Then pull the tree to where I want it and pull it up along side my boat. With one man on the front and one on the back we wire our concrete buckets to the tree and push them overboard on a count of three. This isn't good if you have a long way to go by boat but, it sure saves on damage/cleanup to the boat. I've put out 4 piles in the last month this way.
