I have been fishing for a long time but just don't know the right tournaments to get into does anyone know of any beginning tournaments near the Dallas area?

Join your local Bass Club and fish there tournaments. Usually once a month and learn how they work. You will meet a handful of guys who fish different tournaments and will point you in the right direction.

I second the Bass club suggestion. You might look online for a BASS affiliated club.

Come fish Arlington on Thursday night with us, you'll meet some good.. Well, you'll meet some guys haha and it won't cost you much to see how much tournament bass fishing will cost you! Lol! We all fish trails and some club members so come out and have fun and ask questions!
