This question might belong on the fly fishing thread but ill ask it here anyways. Anyone have a fly that they recommend when it comes to catching blue gill. I'm trying to get my little brother into fly fishing but he might get discouraged if he doesn't catch any (He's only 9 years old). Any help would be greatly appeciated!

Woolly Bugger.
Black, brown with a little red, white or yellow in it.

You should get some pretty good answers here. I have seen a lot of Gills posted that were caught on the fly!

Woolly Bugger.
Black, brown with a little red, white or yellow in it. I don't fish on the fly but for what I have seen posted in the past the Wooly Bugger has to be the one of choice. As stated above there are a few fly anglers who post here and hopefully some of em will reply!

As already mentioned, wooly buggers work great! I prefer the olive colors. Bluegills are not very picky. Anything that looks "buggy" should work. I try to stick to the smaller submersable flies...I just seem to catch much more on them than I do poppers. Bead head nymphs are absolute bluegill killers... And if you can find them...ones with legs also work fantastic!

Any sinking bug with rubber legs will generally outfish any fly without rubber legs.

Use this combination: Wooly Bugger (tied 1-3 feet above the end of your line), with a pistol pete below it (tied to the end of your line)... This eliminates the need of a bite indicator, as you are essentially just using the wooly bugger to perform that job (and as another opportunity to catch a fish). This is most effective in moving water, but I have caught everything from trout to bass to bluegills this way, on moving water, or lakes. Also, it is one hell of a fight if you hook up a double on a fly rod, and fishing with two flies, it is only a matter of time until you'll get to experience that Here are some links to images in case you do not know what wooly buggers or pistol petes look like, and good luck out there! http://www.west-fly-fishing.com/fly-pattern-recipe/wet/woollybugger.jpeg http://images.cabelas.com/is/image/cabelas/s7_113170_006_01?hei=220&wid=380 Also, even if you don't use this exact combo of flies, fishing wet flies underneath dry flies is the way to go regardless!

Professor B, you are either a great teacher, or the kid is a natural... it took me about 5 outings with the fly rod before I caught my first fish on it... Congrats to you and your little brother!

Spider's (both sinking and floating foam ones) with rubber legs. I haven't ever caught $hit on a wooly bugger. Everybody praises them and when I tie one on my constant bite ceases to exist. I'll even test them out when I find the gills stacked up, tie it on and nothing. Tie on another spider type bait and bam. Catchin fish.
