Creds first, SAL #242.
A friend and myself are looking at getting fishing kayaks. Some larger water but no salt water. We like the Cuda 12 @31" beam but we like to stand to fish. The new Big Rig has a 37" beam.
I would like to know from those vets if the 31" Cuda is good for extended periods of standing fishing. Not "can" I stand but will I be able to stand for long periods without constantly worrying about falling in the drink.
Or should we wait for the Big Rig?
No fairy wands here, we're using 7'rigs for large fish. Some of our fishing will be behind breaker walls in Erie for giant smallmouth.
Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Mike

You will find that the Cuda 14 will be a better choice and much more stable standing IMO. As for long periods of time, I personally cant answer that. It has the legroom standing up and feels comfortable doing so, because of the width you can spread your legs out, and have the control of your balance. As for the Big Rig. Its to early to tell. Its a new product. And reviews are going to be limits.

Not so, the 12 and 14 are the same width. its the length of the craft that's different. your looking to do larger water you well always be better off in a longer craft. you will find crossing larger bodies of water much easier when you have more kayak on the surface. I would suggest trying some crafts out before buying to get a better feel to suit your needs. Review the Santa Cruz also its a very stable and fast kayak.

I'm not a fan of the cuda12. the hatches are to small. the 14 has a much larger hatch.we couldn't stuff a 30L dry bag in the 12 hatch. But then if you go with the 14 you should just go with the big tuna since they are very similar and the tuna has a live well.lol......choices choices choices.....whats a big rig btw?

small hatches but the big rig looks nice IMO. FYI: lot of innovative options in the major name yaks coming out very soon. we got a sneak peek at the 2014 WS ride 135 which u may wanna consider as well. you may or may not wanna wait to take advantage of the clearance of 2013 inventory or possibly just to wait n see what everyone is going to offer in there new 2014 models.

Hey Fork14!
Without knowing your general age bracket (prime time or on the downhill slide), weight class (petite/full figured), and a few other factors best determined by someone that's experienced in what would best work for how and where you intend to fish, you may or may not be looking at the best kayak for your needs.
How far will you need to paddle to get to those more protected waters to stand and fish? Some kayaks that are great for standing are not so great for moving from point A to point B. Some guys that have great balance can get by with kayaks that some others of the same size/age bracket wouldn't dream of.
I mention this because of how different my choice was after getting on the water demonstrations and figuring out what the best tradeoffs were for me.

Over the hill a little, 240lbs, and I'd be mostly fishing for largemouth and small mouth on lakes. I'll need to try to find a stocking dealer so I can try a few rigs out. Fishing kayaks are not very popular around here (northern WV). That may pose a problem. Maybe I'm worried too much about standing, it's what I'm used to from full bass boats. Thanks for the responses so far!

Since the Big Rig is still a prototype, they do not know exactly what the final specs will be. They will probably be similar to the prototype but we'll all just have to wait and see!!

That metal bar would be annoying. And I wouldnt want a power pole in my kayak.

Haven't bought a kayak yet but wanted to bump this up to the top because there may now be some who have used the Big Rig. The Big Rig is still the one I'm leaning towards but, since no one around here uses kayaks nor sells kayaks to demo, I need you guys/gals for guidance. I am curious as to the Big Rigs capacity for camping. I'd like to take a weekend trip with my gear and so I thought the Big Tuna may be a better option.

See my post about my new 14 Cuda for sale. Never been in the water, it's either a 2012 or 13, not sure.

Highly recomend a rudder with the BigRig. Car topping is a little ruff, she's heavy. As far as standing yes all day long np.

if your standing for a long time i can see the bar being an asset. if your going to sit and stand i wouldnt want it on my yak personally.
paddled the Big Rig at the last Get ToGether. i found it to b VERY stable. Roomy but a not easy to paddle or manuver at all. If your looking at standing in a SIT ON TOP kaYAK at 240lbs. for long periods of time, Look at the Big Rig, Nucanoe, and Pro Angler.
As always demo if at all possible because there r give & takes with them all.
