I'm looking at trying out the fly fishing game. I have some friends that said they could teach me.
Are the Bass Pro and Cabela's starter kits ($80-$110) worth getting or are they junk? I don't want to sell a kidney to get in, but I don't want to waste money and frustrate myself fighting my equipment.

There is a lot of good low cost kits out there.... But because you are around DFW I would suggest trying to find some good used equipment.

There in lies the rub... You will get a lot of advice, but fly fishing is not cheap... You can spend wisely, but it is not cheap...
Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

It don't matter , after a few months maybe a year you're gonna want something different & really you can't plan for how you will take to fly fishing , r u gonna be a trout guy on streams or a bass guy in a boat or a pond guy , each has different approaches & techniques. Buy a decent starter rig & if you like fly fishin then start saving up for something that suits you
(Also you can be a carper sludging thru the muck sight fishing for the majestic rubber lip bass)

Bass Pro offers a free introduction to fly fishing class on Sat and Sun mornings. Spending a couple of hours attending one of these sessions before you buy anything will help answer a lot questions and will give you a better idea of the differences in equipment quality. Cabelas and Orvis offer similar classes.

I've got new stuff that's cheep> I've got lots of used stuff that's cheaper. Forget that old,"you get what you pay for" philosophy.-p-

Rex is giving you some great advice about the class at bass pro and similar ones at other places. I know several who started with the Cabelas 3 Forks combination most often in a 3 weight..you never seem to out grow a good 3 weight. Many years later those guys still get a smile on their face when talking about their 3 forks rods. Pearow makes great rods too. If you stick with this hobby long you will soon have more fly rods than you do golf clubs.
Have fun with this stuff.

I have a buddy that owns several very expensive fly rods. We have both used his rods and my Cabelas rod. The difference is very minimal. I catch just as many fish on my $80 rod as he does on his $600 rod. If you're going to get into it real heavy then start saving your money now but if you just want to be able to throw some flies then I recommend the Cabelas rod and reel combos.
