What's a good set up to catch some medium sized sharks? I have a 9 or 10 foot ugly stik with a penn fierce 8000 reel, I believe 20 or 25 pound test, what leader setups are good for medium sharks? Also how should you handle them once you get them close to shore

I personally don't target shark, and try to insure they bite off of my mono leaders, I respect the guys that DO IT RIGHT. Shark are a fragile fish for their size and can be fatally injured if not released correctly. Same goes for Sting Rays.

There are also many different species that look very close, you need to be able to identify them exactly so you only keep the very few that you can legally.

I feel everybody should know how to handle sharks and rays so that they can land, and release them in a safe manner, thus allowing them to continue to be the important part of our fishery as they are.

OK, I'll step down off of my soap box now..........

Your setup should do fine. Just make sure you use a 60-80lb wire leader (preferrably 4ft long) and the proper amount of weight for how strong the surf is. The main thing to remember about shark fishing is that you need to keep the line tight.

For how to fight them to shore, what you really need to do is let them wear out before you get them too close. Once theyre worn out the current will bring them up almost all the way on the sand and then simply grab them by the tail and drag them up.

Now here is the hardest part: the release. It is important that you are QUICK. Yes, take a ton of pictures, that 6ft shark you just caught is hella cool. But unless you plan on keeping it (not recommended for sharks 5ft+ and only certain types) you need to get it back in the water ASAP to ensure its survival. Simply drag it back out by its tail until the belly isnt scratching the sand and move it back and forth in the waves. When it gives some resistance against you holding it, let it go and back out of the water. It might take a couple minutes if the fight was long, but I would say a shark quickly released has a great survival rate (no hard facts to back this up, just personal experience)

Good luck and tight lines! Feel free to send me a pm if you have any questions
