anyone got any advice that may help me skip jigs with a baitcaster. i can get em way up under dock and branches side arming it off the front of the boat but if i ever have to fish out the back of a boat im going to be up spits creek. Ive been working on skipping a jig for a couple months but still blow the reel up nearly every time.
A guy told me, "I run around in an old tin boat for years, I know exactly how you people are!"

Not a pro at all. I blow it up all the time. But this is what I do...
On the reel: tension knob is loose, bait falls freely. brake is set high--because I'm terrible at controlling the spool with my thumb. I use a 6-6 rod Medium with 1/4 jig.
I taught myself how to do this in the spring. Can do it successfully on occasion. I still need LOTS of practice.

I'm using similar setup as swalker, but a 6-8 med/heavy extra fast rod. Got my reel set up just like he said. I'm getting better, but still very inconsistent. Definately a love/hate relationship!!! I will say, that with jigs I've done better with the traditional pitching delivery vs sidearm that seems to go better on the soft plastics. Not sure why, but that's been my experience.

i can put a jig pretty much anywhere i want to when i throw it side arm i use a 7'3 duckett white ice pete ponds jig rod with a shimano curado200e7. sometimes i wonder why i even try to make myself learn to skip it if i can deliver it where i want it side arm but i know there will come a time when i need ot be able to skip it.

If your going to fishing out of the back of the boat. I would learn to pitch skip or back hand skip.
What kind of jig are you trying to skip?

I'm only 5-7, so the shorter rod works better for me. I use the lighter rod, because I use lighter jigs. Loads the rod better.

This is a simple thing to help until you get the feel. Pull off enough line for a good skip. 30-40 ft..aka the length of your normal dock. Then take some electrical tape and wrap the remaining line on the spool.
This will help you from blowing out the real and when you get that feeling down then you can take off the tape and fire away.
This also works as a great tool to start someone off on a baitcaster.
I use a 6'9" Zillion with a T3 Ballistic reel. Max cast control and the bait barely falls when you release the spool. With this rig I can make the mistake and hammer a dock without much of a blow up and if I get lucky and miss the dock I get about a 40-50 ft skip with no issues.

Pitch skip... Set spool tension vey loose and tighten ur centrifugal brake or magnetic break. Throw the jig low to the water you want it to hit the water right in front of your target. Make sure u follow through

Go with the shorter rod 6'6". Work on skipping on the flip as you lift up. Imagine skipping a rock. Go lighter with the jig until you get the hang of it. Nothing extra big on the trailer, until you get use to it. Try some other baits. A Zoom fluke with a 1/16 oz. weight.
