Need help identifying the purpose and reason for what looks to be an aluminum or steel plate mounted between transom and motor. Second picture in the attached link gives best view.

Can someone tell me what it is for? Does this raise any red flags for anyone? I am not assuming it's a negative, just trying to get more information about it.

Thank you!

I have seen people do that on old boats in an ill advised effort to strengthen a bad transom or to cover up a lot of motor mount holes. Yes, it would raise a red flag if I were looking at the boat. I really cannot think of any other reason to do it.

Usually done in a cheap attempt to fix a rotten transom. I can't say for certain on that boat though. It is best to take it with the owner and have it inspected. If he will not, run away.

TBS - SHHHHH! See your PM from me.

Well, I got everything I need from you guys. Plenty of options. Gonna pass on this Champ. Too far to drive with that kind of uncertainty for me.

the yr champ had a wood/glass transom, good chance it has problems.

I had to redo my 82 due to my lack of attention to through bolts for the engine and water rot.

ended costing about 800.00 for materials and my labor, shop would have charged about 1,500.00 to fix it.

I say look for another boat, he has that one overpriced anyway, and I am a champion owner.
