I'm headed up to Pagosa Springs, CO next week for a family vacation and would like to bring the fly rod to do some fishing. Any suggestions on where I should start? I will also have access to several of the small lakes in the area and possible a kayak.

Thanks!

There's a city park there that is stocked with trout.

The San Juan river can be good.

Echo Canyon has warm-water species and also stocked with trout.

I don't know anything about the lakes around the golf course

Go to Williams Creek Reservoir which is about 20 minutes northwest of Pagosa Springs. Walk across the dam and down to the creek that flows out below the dam. There was some very good brook trout fishing there last summer when we were there.

I leave this Saturday for Durango and will be in Pagosa Springs a day or 2. I am going to try my luck behind the malt shop in Pagosa on the Upper San Juan River I have heard the Pieadra and Williams Creek both fish great

Piedra is really good. I walked in about six miles into the 12 mile horse or foot only section and fished all the way out was a great day. In town You have to watch out for the rubber hatch (toobs) but this hatch can be accompanied by a boob hatch this is always good. Ther are some very good fish right in town and are not skittish at all I caught a bunch of fish right after a group Of toobs had passed.

My favorite place! Even talked the lady to honeymoon there in the fall. Piedra is a lot of fun, fish it below the confluence of the williams creek. If you drive through Amarillo on your way up there I'll be on the side of I-40 with my fly rod and waders on.

Head up and over Wolf Creek Pass to Big Meadow Reservoir. The creek that comes out of it is not real big, but normally has lots of fish in it. The lake itself is good too especially if you have a yak handy.

I have a TON of family up there. Great places to fish! I believe there was a fire up near that area though...

Appreciate all the advice. I just got a fly rod this past weekend, so this will be my first time fly fishing. Hoping to at least get a few brownie and bows. Think we'll focus on the SJ in town, but may try to make it up to Piedra or Williams, as i;ve heard those are hot. Now back to practicing my cast.....thanks!
