Hi everyone,

Headed down to Surfside / Freeport after about 18 years hoping to make some memories w/ my 6 yr old son. I dont know how much that area has changed since 1994 but I can only imagine. I do remember taking 288 all the way down but don't quite remember how to get to the jetties (I do remember having to drive through a neighborhood but could never figure out the same way twice). hmmm

Does anyone have any advice on where to go, what to use etc? I am not targeting any specific species, but this is more about taking him back to where I used to fish and hopefully have him catch something worth tellin a story about. It would be great to pull in some reds or flounder though.

I usually take him to the Galveston piers and I am trying to avoid getting caught in the rocks and losing a bunch of tackle like I used to do when I last fished there (back in high school)
mad

Now, as a dad in his 30's I'm hoping to make a more educated trip. smile

Thanks in advance.

I'll be there saturday morning wading the beach front. Take him to the jetties and fish live shrimp with popping corks. You should be able to land some decent trout.

I sure will Paul. I'm headed down either tomorrow or Saturday (depending on how much work I can finish between posts) smile

288 now bypasses Angleton and comes in on the other side of Lake Jackson. Just stay on 288 thru Lake Jackson and exit on 332. 332 will take you over the bridge and into Surfside. The jetties will be to your right on Bluewater Hwy/ Ft Velasco Dr. Go to the end and turn left to the county park.

You can also stay on 288 till it ends and turn right on FM1495 and cross over to the Quintana side of the jetties.

Thats great info. Thanks a million Dave! I was trying to figure that out on google maps. And looks like they have really improved the whol parking situation as well! Is there a fee to park / access it or is it still free?

There doesn't seem to be a charge on the Surfside county park. The Quintana side has a $5 parking fee at the county park but I'm not sure that includes the parking at the base of the jetty. It may be free.

Well, we went out Saturday morning and spent about 6 hours. Fished popping corks as well as the bottom with live shrimp and squid. Bite never really turned on. I caught a small croaker which I turned right back around and threw out as bait. Let that soak for a while and hooked onto something BIG, but it wound up breaking me off.

Didnt feel too bad as no one was really catching anything. The few I talked to that did catch said they brought in a couple of small sharks but thats it. Probably going to head back out next weekend to try my luck.

Thanks for the advice and tips guys. The drive and parking situation has improved a lot at the jetty.
