Okay, for the umpteenth time, I've decided to give a bait caster a try, with the ultimate goal of using braid and top water frogs on it. But, to start with, which type line is least likely to snarl, and what's a good weight? (This is for bass fishing.)

they're all likely to "snarl". It's mostly operator error not the line. Braid is not what you want for froggin anyways, use mono....20# big game. Braid soaks up water and sinks, you want a line that floats.

Huh, almost everyone recommends braid for topwater frogs. I was using it this morning and it didn't keep the frog from staying on the surface. My problem with braid is that it is very hard to work out snarls.

Power pro 65 pound braid is what I use and have never had any problems with it sinking.

Mono is the easiest to learn with. Start with Stren Original or Berkley Trilene XL in 12 or 14 pound test.

The main ingredient in mono is nylon which has a density great then 1 g/cm^3, usually somewhere in the ballpark 1.05-1.1. That's why after mono breaks the surface tension of the water it sinks. Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene, which is what braid is made from, usually has a density around .93-.95 g/cm^3 which is why it floats.

65 or 80 pound braid would be my choice. Less likely to bird's nest and when it happens it shouldn't be too hard to clear out.

I use 65 power pro for my frogs and buzzbaits, first I ever heard of braid sinking. How long do you keep your frog out?

What type of baitcast reel do you have? You might want to slow the spool down as slow as you can and engaged all the brakes. As you get comfortable you can loosen it up. I would practice with mono first 15-17lb. Braid is to expensive to bird nest. Start out with light casts. To many times people try and throw it a mile thats how birdnests happens. I don't care how long you have been using one you still get the occasional birdnest even the pros.

65# braid is really hard to birdsnest in my opinion. Fluoro was the most difficult if paired with a cheap rod/baitcast, for learning purposes.

Once you "get it", the line won't matter. Best advice I was given was to use a smooth rhythm in my cast and make sure I stopped the spool right before my lure touched the water in the target area.

Fish on hook! Reel him in, slowly.

I started using a bait caster again awhile back. Practiced in the yard. I don't think I could ever go back to a spinning reel for regular fishing. Yeah I get a birds nest once in awhile, but they fish so well!

It's not about the line, it's about proper reel setup and the trained thumb.
