I forgot to back my braid with mono. Do you think it will be ok, or should I take it off?

I have two reels with braid on them. One is backed with mono and one isn't. I mixed the two reels up and I honestly don't know which one is backed and which one isn't. Haven't been able to tell the difference nor have I had any problems.

You mean it eats into the metal?

I've never put backing on reels with braid. I've had no problems.

The main thing with the mono backing, is that it saves you from putting a lot of expensive braid on the reel.

You mean it eats into the metal? So the line doesn't dig down into the wraps when you set the hook.

Like others have said, the only reason I use backing is to save on the high dollar Diawa Samurai braid that I use.

I have had problems with braid slipping on the spool without a mono backing. I thought there was a problem with the drag on my older Curado so I called the guys at SW Parts in Dallas. The first question they asked was "Are you using braid"? Told me to use some mono backing-problem solved.

Like everyone is saying, the performance of the braid without backing isn't affected. Sometimes braid might start to slip off the spool when spooling, but other than that, backing is mainly used to save money on high quality braid for your reel! Hoped this helped.

Dylan I've completely ruined a reel of braid before because I was lazy and didn't back it with mono. First fish I hooked, I bird nested a spinning reel so bad I had to trash the line. It slipped bad and I won't play that game again. Now I always throw a little mono on before the braid.
