Finally used the 4WD on my Durango for the first time since I got it. Boat ramp was covered with sand, silt & mud and was slippery wet all the way up from repeated usage by other truck & trailers. The folks next to me were using an SUV with front-wheel drive to pull their 21' ski boat out of the water & the only thing happening was the front wheels were spinning.

Got the boat loaded up (about 3 tons worth of boat & trailer), put it in 4WD, and just rolled up that wet slippery ramp ...

... from now on, any truck I own will have 4WD!!

(Parenthetically, I offered them the use of my wheel chocks to give the front tires something to push against ... the other boaters in that group ended up getting behind the SUV and pushing while the driver drove up the ramp)

It's amazing the difference 4wd makes. I see so many guys even on good ramps that will only back in to where the back tires on their truck or SUV is still a foot from the water. It's so nice to make down as far as I want and not have to worry as much.

I agree, expensive but adds peace of mind in certain instances.

I'm sure a heavy RWD vehicle would have pulled a boat out no problem too.

FWD and pulling a boat, BRILLIANT! lol

A locking rear differential is a necessity in 2WD. Lockers or the ones with clutches, they make a big difference.

I used to have a Toyota that would pull a boat up the ramp better than most full sized trucks. I think the deal there was the rear wheels were farther forward than most of the big trucks. Make the wheelbase longer and loses something at the ramp.

I've seen alot of trucks crash at the Diablo ramp at Amistad because of the lack of 4wd, that ramp is a slippery sucker when wet.

not on a slippery steep ramp.

on canyon lake, you can't launch at Jacobs or potters creek with any boat traffic unless you have 4wd....same goes for cranes mill marina. once that ramp gets wet its over for a non-4wd vehicle

I promise that a Tacoma won't pull a boat up a ramp better than a V-8 half ton truck or a diesel....not a snowballs chance in hell.

I had a Tacoma, it would pull a ski boat up the ramp, but only in low range...in 4 hi I would burn the clutch getting it going.

That's a standard problem not a 2/4 wd problem.

Ive used a chevy s-10 with a 4-banger and 5-speed to launch a boat with, its just plain hard on them even when driven correctly, they just aren't built for it. Ive also seen people who drove a standard most of their life including pulling trailers spin out and kill a vehicle manya times just trying to pull a boat out.

A 21' ski boat and FWD. I hope that dude has a mainenance fund set up because he is going to need it. I had an electronic locker on my 2009 Tacoma and never used it on a ramp with my 18' Ranger. Every now and then my LS would kick in put it was rare.

I've got the g80 in my 2wd trailblazer and have yet to have any problems pulling a heavy 20ft boat up a ramp. Same ramps I've seen pickups spinning their tires and then putting it in 4wd.

Its all about throttle control. Do not punch the gas, just keep easing on it until you start moving, if you start slipping then let of a little. Its much more difficult with a standard.

with a one wheel peel its tough, especially on a ramp like Jacobs creek

plus, its way more fun to kick it into 4 wheel and power up the ramp with everyone staring at you in awe

I really only use my 4x4 at the boat ramp and the deer lease.

I've seen a few ramps that would have been a nightmare with a 2wd pickup only. Lots of long 2wd burnouts up the Lake Alan Henry ramp when you've already had 3 hours of people pulling their boats out of the water.
