Are you limited in the number of batteries you can have? i.e. 12V, 24V etc.

I have a 17ft bass tracker with a 46lb thrust motor. If the wind is very strong (20 mph+ gusts) the motor barely holds me in place on a highest setting. In 15mph wind it is a grind.

Not sure the weight of your boat, or any currents you'd deal with on a river, but I'd go for the highest lb thrust you have the battery space for and can afford (within reason).

Aint worth removing a live well, a boat that size doesn't need a 36V system...IMO. I would bet most 24V TM will be fine, and a strong 12V will work. My buddy has a 17ft flat bottom with a 56lb thrust (12V), and it is plenty for that boat. But thats my 2cents

A 24 volt system with around 65# of thrust should do you a very good job. Getting a longer shaft will allow you to fish into stronger winds and keep the prop in the water.

got a 17 ft aluminum bass tracker. Came with a 43 lbs thrust motorguide. In strong current or high winds it was worthless. Changed it out for a 24v 80 lb minnkota and does great in all conditions

My 70lb riptide will do anything I could ask of it on my 18' Xpress. I say get a larger motor than you think you need, you can always turn them down. A 55 would have probably been enough for me, but I don't regret getting the larger motor one bit.

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space!
