Hey guys. Just thought I would share my experience with the wag bags. Not something a lot of people want to talk about but its important when you go camping to take "EVERYTHING" with you when you leave and leave no trace behind. For those of you not familiar a wag bag is a "toilet kit" for when you just got to go. The kit comes with the bag you do your business in, a bio-product that's already in the bag, a really tiny thing of toilet paper(your gonna need a roll of t.p. for a power dump I assure you of that), a hand wipe, and a zip lock bag that you store your wag bag in until you can toss it in a trash. I recently went on a overnight trip on the Pecos and being on a kayak your space is limited. I didn't want to bring a extra bucket or the portable toilet made for the wag bag so I started looking at ways to do my business. This is what I came up with and believe it or not it worked perfect. The picture is purdy self explanatory. I call it "The crate turd catcher".

Yeah, seems like any dump on the river turns out to be a power dump. Maybe it's the fresh air. I usually dig a hole, cover it up when done, the put rocks on top of that so nobody steps in it. When taking a dump on a heavily used stretch of river, like say the Upper Brazos, tread lightly when looking for a location to go. Any place that looks good to you has probably been used by many others already.

Good idea. Off topic...what part of the Pecos did you kayak? I was there a little more than a year ago. We put in a Continental Ranch and took out at the ramp by HWY 90.

Ever hear of E-Coli contamination ? C'mon Have some consideration for the downstream effects of your actions.
I've been backpacking into isolated areas and find toilet paper, etc left behind from careless folks that did a half [censored] job of burying their [censored]... rains unwashed it, or should I say washed it right into the stream.

Human waste is not the same as wild animal waste. Wild animals don't travel to say.....india one week and home the next. All poop is not made equal. lol. Carrying your poo out is the law in some areas. Just imagine camping in a park with heavy traffic and everyone must go.... That amount of waste is bad for the environment. I know that rivers like the Brazos, Pecos, Devils don't see that much traffic compare to a park like Yellowstone but that doesn't mean its less important to me. If we practice these types of things now and be a good example then maybe it will help in the future. I never leave the brazos without bringing someone elses trash out of it. Drives me crazy. You think because you throw some dirt on it that's ok. Its not. Plus a river like the Pecos doesn't give many places to bury. Its all rock and yes I did see human waste around our campsite on the rocks and no it didn't look like it was "going away".(went from 90 bridge up river 12 miles then back to 90.)

Just poo on the bank. cover it up and bury it good and its good to go.
No way I'm gonna haul around a bag of chit in my kayak.
people have been pooing next to rivers for thousands of years, a poo here and a poo there isn't going to turn a river like the brazos or devils into a cess pool

[censored]-a-crate. It's simple to me. Practice bad habits on a river helps it turn into a bad river. Practice good habits on the river helps turn it into a good river.

IMO you're probably doing more harm to the environment with the plastic bag than you would be by just leaving your waste behind. Just because you toss it in the trash doesn't mean it goes away. Dig a hole and do your business, then carry on.
