I'm heading to Corpus for the weekend. We're going to be hanging out with my girlfriend's family and, up until last night, wasn't thinking I was going to be able to spend any time fishing. I hadn't planned to take the yak or any of my fishing gear, but we received the "itinerary" for the weekend and there apparently is going to be fishing tourney. Taking the yak may or may not be an option, but in general I'm really only set up for bass fishing. Any of you have suggestions on gear/lures/bait I should pick up? I don't have much experience with saltwater, so any tips would be appreciated.

I carry two boxes of softplastics when I'm at the coast.

Box #1:
DOA CAL 3" Paddletail: Copper Crush, Red/Silver/White, Purple/Chartreuse Tail, Pearl/Chartreuse Tail, Rootbeer/Chartreuse Tail, & Morning Glory.
H&H Original Cocahoe: Pumpkinseed/Chartreuse
Hooks: 1/16 oz & 1/8 oz standard jighead, 1/16 oz & 1/8 oz weedless hooks, & 3/0 worm hooks.

Box #2
Heddon Super Spook Jr: Silver Mullet, Foxy Momma, & Spectrum.
Bandit Footloose Crankbait:Chrome/Blue Back & Black
Johnson 1/4oz Sprite: Gold
DOA 3" Shrimp: Gold glitter, copper crush, & Morning Glory.

I've also had success throwing suspending hardbaits like the MirrOlure MirrOdine and MirrOminnow. My preference is to DOA, but I have thrown Texas Tackle Factory, Norton, Bass Assassin, Brown, etc and they will all catch fish. Go with a brand that you like and get fishing. Recent trips the strawberry/white has been the most productive.

Basically, start early with topwaters and then switch to subsurface hardbaits or softplastics when the topwater bite dies. For wading bring a pair of old tennis shoes because of the oysters and remember to shuffle your feet and not take steps.

Try wading Kates Hole or Packery Flats if you're not taking a kayak.

I guess I should point out that you don't need to go out and buy all those lures as it's quite expensive. To condense it some:

Bone or Silver Mullet Spook Jr; a couple packs of softplastics in strawberry/white, purple/chartreuse, new penny (gulp), pumpkinseed/chartreuse and pearl/chartreuse; 1/4oz weedless gold spoon; 1/4oz DOA clear/gold flake Shrimp; and 1/8 oz jigheads. Maybe some Alameda popping corks for working shrimp under a popping cork (2/0 kahle hook if using live shrimp). If you plan on fishing the surf or jetties bring some 1/4oz jigheads; MirrOlure 52MR red head/white body; Gotchas; and some 1/2oz silver spoons.

Baitcaster or spinning with 12lbs test line and medium power rod.

It's ok Neumie. While I don't have the funds to go out and buy all of this at once, I certainly appreciate the detailed list. At the very least, this gives me a good starting point on what I should be looking at.

Fluoro gonna be ok down there?

Fluorocarbon will work just fine.
