We never had trouble hooking them until this cold front came through. I haven't been out since.

My Grandpa, God bless his soul, usedto say "West is the Best, East is the least, South blows the bait in the fish's mouth, and a North wind just blows"

Words from a wise man.

I use a Carolina rig as for hook well I use trebill, and circle and standart hooks, I would not know a kahle unless it hooked me.
so that being said I caught 2 turtles this morning at the medina river, one on a standart and the other on a circle, they do put up a fight and to land grab the leader.

Could also be bluegills that are fooling with the bait. I had my slip cork go under several times only to come up with nothing and when I checked the cut perch I had on as bait it was pretty well beat up.
Use larger bait chuncks and see if that helps and give the fish plenty of time to commit.

Just one more cast!

If you are actively fishing one rod, then you can set the hook.
If you are running 5 or 6 rods, you need a hook that sets itself (to some degree) or you would miss every fish. I always run a bunch of rods.

I use these Double action Circle hooks, either Team Catfish 8/0 but mostly Diiache 7/0.

One of the big factors could be sharpness. When I started using Diiaches, I never looked back. They are really really sharp.

I have a lot of learning to do, but hooks have not been a problem for me.

Here is a Chad Ferguson article on the topic. It has some good information that has served me well.
