I was born and raised in Houston and i left in 2001 to join the marines. I am still serving and my new duty station is in Ohio. I come down about every 4 months and i always come down to galveston to do some fishing. I really dont know the areas but what i do know is that we end up going to galveston, take the ferry and as soon as we get off the ferry, to the left side is a small area that i usually go fish at. not sure what that area's called but sometimes we get skunked and sometimes we dont.
Im not a newbie at fishing but i am a newbie at telling you guys what kinds of fish i have caught or whats in there. enough about me, my questions are:
is this a good spot to fish at?
if so, what kinds of fish was i prob catching? lol
and finally, is all fishing in galveston pretty much done with a simple carolina rig on a shrimp on a 1 oz weight? I ask because 90% of the people i see fishing, all they ever use is squid and shrimp. I guess i just want to go out there knowing what im doing and not just wild goose hunting hoping to catch something.

Best tasting ... whatever I get to cook.
In honesty, I keep all whiting, reds, trout, sheeps, and flounder. Pompano isn't too bad either.

Red fish over the grill and/or thin sliced redfish in the oven smeared w/ butter lemmonpepper and fresh squeezed lemon, flounder baked in the oven w/ butter, lemmonpepper, and fresh squeezed lemon , and the same w/ speckled trout in the oven. Just the basics but still deliscious.
BUT, there are other recipes that will come up on this topic and some good ones too!!!!

My best sheepshead spot is the 45 bridge onto the island. I use a dead shrimp and jig it off the bottom from a kayak. No one answered this when i asked about a month ago it was nice to finally hear some logical responses.

Ok several places, Rollover pass is great for fishing. Fish the ship channel near the jetties too. I often fish from a boat so when I do bankfish, I am to lazy to to walk the whole jetty but fish the channel side with bait though I am sure artificials will sometimes work. San Luis Pass on the other side of the island can also be good at times, though I have not done good there in a while. I like wading the state park because I often catch some good reds there and occasionally some nice flounder.
