Does anyone here ever donate fish they've caught to any kind of shelter or church? Also anyone known if it's legal to do this?

Those wonderful government standards that grade restaurants usually prevent that. Since the prep conditions are unknown, they are treated as unclean.

You can give fish away as long as the person you are giving them to does not go over their possession limit. The Wildlife Resource Document can be used to show a transfer of legally caught fish to another person in this event. As far as places that will take the fish it is rare that a church or business will take the fish on account of they do not want the liability that goes with eating fish of unknown origin. Generally it is better to stick to giving the fish to an actual person that you know will put it to good use. As far as commercial goes. You can not give fish to any commercial operation with the intent of resale or public consumption such as a restaurant without the proper licensing on both parts.

I used to donate lots of fish to a certain food pantry in Plano. I guess I won't name them since I don't know how on the up and up this was, but they were glad to have it. Since we volunteered a lot with the youth group kids, I guess they figured they could trust us. I even gave them a cooler full of halibut I couldn't use in time.

I give alot of Flathead meat to a semi local Battered Woman's facility and they really enjoy it. No one is the wiser and I doubt even the snitch's would get a second notice from officials.
To others that do,WELL DONE!

Give them to the pastor of a small church and he'll feed many in the congregation with them. Give them to the head of a big church and he'll have a fish fry for the staff.

I gave my catfish to a family fishing on the bank and later watched him release them. He didn't feel like cleaning them. But that was a first, I always give them to bankers if I can. They most always are so grateful! Several times I gave bags of fillets to neighbors who I know likes fish and will cook them and feed folks. When we have a big shore lunch we just invite everyone in the park weather we know them or not. That's always pretty cool. Once 8 of us were fishing and 55 folks showed up for the shore lunch at noon. I had them big fillet tweasers and a big platter of fish and was acting as the waitress and was passing out piles of fish 3-4 platters later I grabbed me a plate and headed back to fryers and no fillets left! :-( LOL

I've done this before. Give them to the pastor of a small church and he'll feed many in the congregation with them. Give them to the head of a big church and he'll have a fish fry for the staff.

If you feel guilty about the fish you took out of the water and are dead now.Just practice catch and release. In my experience that usually takes care of them or that.
