Hey guys, I'm new to salt and need some suggestions. I have been out wade fishing twice and have only had catfish stealing my bait. I was bottom fishing with live shrimp. How do I avoid these bait stealers?

Thanks guys!

If you figure out a way....be sure and let us know. Heck, write a book about it. You'd be RICH! The truth is, there really isnt a way to avoid it. It just kind of comes with the territory. The only way to avoid the crabs at least, is to fish off the bottom. Croaker, piggy perch and the like are going to go after shrimp regardless.

Use lures. If the fish are hungry you'll catch them. Helps keep the so called "trash fish" at bay.

When using bait (live or dead), you're always going to have bait stealers. You're pretty much going to have to put up with it.

Use lures and avoid using Gulp soft plastics.
Yes, bait stealers love to pick at Gulp as well.

Any suggestions on lures? And how could I keep a bait off the bottom for a bait that I throw out and let sit? (Not a popping cork)

....most "lures" will need to be used by casting out and then retrieving them to catch fish. Can't think of one that you would just throw out there and let sit. Good one to use I might suggest would be the Strike King "Redfish Magic". Caught several boxes of nice reds up to 32" this past weekend using them.

...here is a pic of what I was using all weekend when targeting the Reds. Big Trout was a different story! One of the many caught Friday afternoon that were all 25"-27" fish, with the occasional ten minute fight just to have to throw the over the limit fish back over the side! I am now a firm believer!!!
