 RPM's at 2800 When in neutral????

I just bought a new boat and I was breaking in the the motor tonight. Mercury ProXS 150, I was following the manual for the break in procedure. When I would put the motor in neutral it would rev up to 2800 RPM's. it would stay there and hold. When I put it in gear it would drop back down to 750 RPM's. Am taking it to Cabela's tomorrow so there shop guys can check it out. Am just frustrated and can't sleep any ideas on what the problem can be. Thanks

Don't shift it with it idling that high! You will blow the gearcase.

sounds like the throttle cable may just need adjusted, does it have a hotfoot?
do take it to where you bought it and get it fixed before running it though, that is blow the motor too high.

my 250 pro xs does the same thing on occasion, when shifted into neutral it will rev to about 2500 rpms, have not figured out the problem yet but when it happens I rev it just alittle higher and let off and it will drop back down to normal idle. But like already stated, never drop it in gear with it above idle.

JimL it sounds like you are getting fuel in the air rail. Could be a diaphragm leaking.
