I just bought a new boat and I was breaking in the the motor tonight. Mercury ProXS 150, I was following the manual for the break in procedure. When I would put the motor in neutral it would rev up to 2800 RPM's. it would stay there and hold. When I put it in gear it would drop back down to 750 RPM's. Am taking it to Cabela's tomorrow so there shop guys can check it out. Am just frustrated and can't sleep any ideas on what the problem can be. Thanks

if it has a hot foot ,might be something keeping it from going back up .mine had some sticks and [censored] under it.

You put it into gear with it revved to 2800rpm? Ouch. Might need a lower unit soon also. Definitely pop the cowling and see if the throttle is backing off all the way and like mentioned earlier, make sure the hotfoot is returning all the way.

If it has a hot foot, cable may be binding.

Ya, if you "pop" in in gear at 2800RPM you will have it the shop for a lot more than a sticky throttle! My foot throttle sometimes sticks a little on top or the spring is not returning it fully to the lowest RPM. I can simply return it to idle with my foot when it occasionally does this. Good luck and DO NOT shift it when it sticks at that high RPM!

The guys that did my rigging put tie straps on the cable and it was causing it to bind, but it never went that high at idle. If it hits 2800 in neutral it should beep for overrev.
