Is there still an advisory against eating fish from Lake Worth? I think me and a buddy are going there next Wednesday to try our hand with some crappie. I may try to get him to change his mind if we can't eat them though.

This is off the TPWD website: "advisory against consuming blue catfish, channel catfish and smallmouth buffalo from Lake Worth in Tarrant County." This replaces the year 2000 advisory that banned comsumption of all fish. here is the link http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/news/releases/20101115.shtm

You can eat the crappie but like Dirty Harry says you have to ask yourself one question, "Do I feel lucky?" "Well do ya?" http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/news/releases/20101115.shtmFrom the news release: "DSHS did not find elevated levels of contaminants in samples of common carp, freshwater drum, largemouth bass or white crappie collected from Lake Worth." I wouldn't eat them given what I know about General Dynamics and now Lockhead Martin. I don't think you will find any EPA or DSHS employees who are in the know who are willing to eat them either. On the other hand, for those of us living in the metroplex, we're all breathing the same air and bathing in the same water so a few fish from the old chemical dumpsite Lake Worth shouldn't make a difference.

I think constant consumption mite not be good .... fillet and take off the skin .... fast growin fish absorb less toxinz .... krappie fish grow very fast to "legal" size

Anyone have any general locations that might be worth hitting up? Do the cat tails close to where they're dredging out right now produce any crappie? Under the bridges?

Try to find some of your deeper docks and it should be good. I would think the bridge will hold some, but they're not your typical shaped bridge columns(820 Bridge). The other bridge might be a little shollow for this time of year. I believe it's only 5 or 6 feet under that one(199 Bridge).

Caught and ate all species of fish from Lake Worth from the 60's to the 90's. No problems so far.

This debate has gone on for years. If you will take the time to research Lake Worth, you will see that the only place PCB's were ever found, was in the "arm" that goes down to Shoreview Drive. This area of the lake borders Lockhead and the base. When gas was discovered under Lake Worth several years ago, the City of Ft Worth decided to use the revenue to revitalize the surrounding area and dredge the lake. Tests were conducted and it was discovered that the only PCB contamination was in the aforementioned arm. For that reason, it was decided not to dredge that area and leave it undisturbed. PCB's are not soluble in water and most if not all have been covered in silt. It should also be added that other chemicals were discovered, aldrin and dieldrin. Both chemicals were used as pesticides from the 1950's to around 1974. I suspect that if they were widely used as pesticides, any reservoir that was impounded prior has these chemicals also. The following conclusions were made by Texas Dept of Health in 2010.
Common carp, freshwater drum, largemouth bass, and white crappie do not contain any inorganic or organic contaminant concentrations, either singly or cumulatively, that exceed DSHS guidelines for protection of human health. Therefore, consumption of these fish species poses no apparent risk to human health.
2. Blue catfish and smallmouth buffalo from Lake Worth contain PCBs at concentrations exceeding DSHS guidelines for protection of human health. Regular or long-term consumption of blue catfish and smallmouth buffalo from Lake Worth may result in adverse systemic health effects. Therefore, consumption of blue catfish and smallmouth buffalo from Lake Worth poses an apparent risk to human health.
3. Smallmouth buffalo contain PCBs at concentrations exceeding DSHS guidelines for protection of human health of one excess cancer in 10,000 equally exposed individuals. Regular or long-term consumption of smallmouth buffalo from Lake Worth may significantly increase the likelihood of carcinogenic health risks. Therefore, consumption of smallmouth buffalo poses an apparent risk to human health.
4. Consumption of multiple organic contaminants (aldrin, dieldrin, PCBs, and PCDFS/PCDDs) in channel catfish from Lake Worth may significantly increase the likelihood of carcinogenic health risks. Therefore, consumption of channel catfish poses an apparent risk to human health
That kids is the lesson of the day and your mileage may vary.

Food for thought: From the JP-8 MSDS - "Keep out of sewers, drainage and waterways. Report spills and releases, as applicable, under Federal and State regulations." And JP-8 is one of the more eco-friendly things that ends up in Lake Worth.
I'm not a radical environmentalist nutjob and I don't fall for the manmade global warming tax collection scam. But I'm telling you folks that having lived in Fort Worth all my life and having known folks who worked at General Dynamics which is now Lockheed and also having known folks at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth which was Carswell you should think twice about eating the fish coming out of Lake Worth.
aclaimsman presents us with the information as provided by government officials and as influenced by entities who might be financially liable. You go on and believe what the EPA, DSHS and others are told to tell you. I know folks (most are now dead from old age) who knew better than to risk eating fish from Lake Worth.
